Let's just say it's a matter of leverage, eh?

Being where Portsmith freaks right out, worrying Dean Corso to no small degree … Manouche parries with Deppville’s finest in hopes of easing Raven’s way … Kat wants nothing to do with Abberline and almost makes a costly mistake in trusting Shaddrack … a stranger named Buck thwarts Shaddrack’s efforts, disappearing as fast as he appeared … Blake talks dreamily of future plans … Raven flies off to be with his mother ... and, having received advice from Malachi, Manouche makes a plan of her own and decides that keeping her heart removed from her sleeve may serve her best at this particular juncture.

Next day at Chez Roux:

Sergeant Godley *enters, sees Manouche and the Wonkas*  Good day, ladies, good day, Mr. Wonka, how is business going?  Don't let me disturb you, but this is a most fortunate coincidence, Manouche, meeting you here!  I have been searching for you, because you are most urgently wanted at the office.  I believe Inspector Abberline has some questions for you regarding a certain piece of stolen goods.  Just an ordinary investigation, he believes you are an eyewitness.  He would be most pleased to see you and settle this matter.

Willy *arches brow, looks suspiciously*  Business is just fine.  *turns and looks at Manouche*

Manouche:  Godley, fancy meetin' you here.  *pauses, looks at him suspiciously*  What stolen goods would those be, mate?

Godley:  I am just the humble messenger.  Inspector Abberline will enlighten you in that matter.

Manouche *eyes him carefully*  Right.  Let's go.  *stands, winks at Willy and Madame*  There's one more Kir Royale in that carafe on th' bar, Willy, brother.  I believe it has yer name on it.  *follows Godley out of Chez Roux*

Madame:  Seems as though more and more officers of Deppville gain less on their manners.

Willy: *smirks, stands up, takes Madame's glass and his own, walks over to bar to refresh both*  Shame it be too, it seems as though they are discredited for a lot these days.

Madame:  Well  when a regular citizen is the one who captures a well known criminal and murderer...

Willy *looks up*  Kim ...

Madame:  I'm just sayin ...

Willy:  I had much of a reason to go after that devil, I'd put a bullet through his head if I had the chance *brings back Madame's refilled Pepsi, goes back to refill his Kir*

Madame *takes a drink*  I'm sure... I didn't think so the first time but...

Willy:  That man is no human ... I believe he's so evil that the Devil himself spit him back out.

Madame:  I could easily believe that love, from what I've heard and seen .... the look in his eyes ... *closes eyes for a moment, remembering his face when he kidnapped her*

Willy *comes over with drink, lifts her head up*  That's over.  Understand?  Madame nods. Willy smiles, kisses her forehead*  So about the new pirate candies...when do you think they'll be ready?

Madame:  Well .... *they fade off in a conversation of the new candy they will soon release to Deppville*

At Abberline’s office:

*Kat watches Godley's departure from the office, having also seen Portsmith leaving earlier, quickly makes her way inside to Abberline's door, opens it without knocking enters, Abberline seated behind desk looks up*

Kat: *blurts out*  It's my understandin' yer tryin' te see my boy.  I demand to know why?

Abberline:  Because he wants to see me.  *Abberline has indeed seen Raven.  After the frustrating conversations he had with Godley, he decided to give up – and went directly into an opium den for the rest of the night.  In one blurred vision, he saw the wolf.  And the boy, trying to reach out for him.*

Kat:  That be because Manouche talks entirely too much.  You forget about it.  He's not yer concern.  I'll handle Raven.  He's just a boy after all.

Abberline:  I am not in the mood for playing games with you, Kat.  You know why I want to see him and why I have a right to see him.

Kat:  You have no right, he's mine.  What if I deny he's yours.  Your memory be faulty at best.  Please, just leave him be.

*Abberline, rising from the seat, lighting a cigarette, moves towards Kat, looks her straight in the eye.*  He knows it, too.  Denying won't help you.

Kat *defeated*  If I let ye see 'em  *sighs*  will you let me set conditions?

On the way to Security Office:

Manouche *walking toward office with Godley, vaguely senses conflict with Abberline and Kat, sees some of Abberline's vision of Raven.  Tears come to her eyes, she quickly wipes them away as Godley looks at her sharply*

Godley:  Let's go.  Portsmith will soon be back and she may not be content to just question you!

Manouche *eyes wide*  Portsmith!  B-but ye made no mention o' Portsmith, mate.  I thought me audience were with Abberline.

Godley *dryly*  For Heaven's sake, you do have a fast tongue but slow feet!  If we don't get in time, it will be Portsmith instead of Abberline, but something says to me that you would prefer the Inspector.  *They reach the office and head for Abberline's room*

Manouche:  Aye, I reckon I would prefer th' Inspector, at that.  Lead on, then, let's get on with it.  I ... *sees silhouette of a second person in Abberline's office*  ... ahhh, looks like he's occupied with someone else, Godley.  We may 'ave to wait.

Kat:  I'll leave you te think it o'er.  When ye've made up your mind let know.  *turns, exits room, sees Manouche with Godley, glares at her; turns and leaves without a word.  Makes her way to The Apparition.

On The Apparition:

Kat *boards ship, spies Shadrack.*   Did every thing go as planned?

Shadrack: *smiles*  Smooth as silk.  The boy's in yer cabin, still unconscious from the gas.

Kat: *sighs*  He'll be fine, the gas was harmless.  Though I'm thinkin' when Blake and Refugee come te, they'll be none to 'appy.  We have te get the ready te sail as quickly as possible.  I'll miss Deppville, but I can't take the chance that Abberline might take it into 'is 'ead te take me Raven.

Later, on The Apparition ...

Raven *groggily wakes up from a strange sleep, vaguely remembers odd dreams.  He doesn't like them, pushes them away.  Something about a stranger coming into his room, a stranger with a harmful aura about him.  He hears a voice in his head: "Beware this man, he'll bring sorrow to you and to your mother."  But before Raven could give voice to his fear, a mist filled his sensibilities, and he felt himself slipping away ... not like a dreamy sleep, which he enjoys, but a terrifying, dreamless nothingness.*

Am I dead?  *He wonders if he asked the question aloud or if it was simply echoing noisily in his head.  He rubs his eyes, focuses, sees not the friendly little room Manouche and Blake had lovingly set up for him, but a dark, unfamiliar cabin with shadows and fog from some unknown fear he can taste.  He also smells and tastes sea air, knows he's on a ship, knows it's not The Libertine Trailer.  He sees a name, Shadrack -- but it means little to him, other than a vague association with fear.  He hears dissonant voices in his head, and he claps his hands over his ears as if to block out the sounds.  What's this?  His mother, turning against Manouche?  Siding instead with this stranger who frightens him so?*  NO!  *This time he's sure he's said it aloud, and he quickly chastises himself, knowing with his Cherokee instinct the importance of maintaining silence in unfamiliar surroundings.  He thinks of Manouche ... the gentle way she spoke to him when she first appeared where Nate was holding him captive ... the songs she sang to him ... how she would try to make him laugh even after suffering at Nate's hands ... the way he could share thoughts with her just by clasping her hands in his ... her willingness to be honest with him when he asked questions ... and best of all, the fact that nothing about him or his ways ever scared her, and he knew it never would.

Then another thought comes into his head.  He's afraid of it but decides he'd better let it in, because he needs to know ... he braces himself, concentrates ... in his mind's eye, he sees Shadrack in another time and place, holding a gun to Manouche's head, and Nate lying on the floor before them, hands tied.  Raven jumps as Shadrack knocks Manouche unconscious with the gun, then speaks to Nate:

"There’s a man named Crane that I’d much prefer dead, but here’s the rub.  It’s my understandin’ that you be out to kill Kat.  Don’t!  I’ll not allow that to ‘appen, savvy?  In return, I set you free.  Do we ‘ave an accord?"

*Raven feels a fury at the sight of Shadrack hurting Manouche; he instinctively starts shifting into a wolf, then stops himself.  Who's Crane, and what does he mean to Kat?  He sighs, feels an urge to cry, then firmly forces the tears back, determined to be worthy of the title of Indian brave.  He hops off the small bed, walks over to the door of the cabin, listens, hears not a sound.  He then returns to the bed, looks out the window at the moon, the wispy clouds drifting by, the few stars sprinkling the skies.  His beloved mother isn't thinking clearly, she needs help.  Also, he's intensely curious about Crane.  He must learn more, perhaps warn him he may be in danger.  He squares his shoulders, shimmers, shifts into white raven shape, flies out window.*

*Kat hears a sound just as she's opening the door, frowns swings the door open and sees the Raven fly out of the window.  Racing to the window she starts to call out but stops herself.  Watches him fly further

away.*  Who was I tryin' te fool, he doesn't want me.  *Biting her lip, fighting the tears.*  Golden rule number 2 luv, never give yer 'eart te anyone they'll only break it.  *she walks over to the bed, sinks down upon it.  Hangs her head.

Shaddrack enters, looks around.*  Where's the boy?

Kat *in a dead voice*  Figure it out, he's a shape shifter and he didn't want te stay.

Shaddrack:  Should I go after him?

Kat *sorrowfully*  No let 'em go.  I've already lost him.  Just finish gettin' the ship ready and leave me be.

Shaddrack:  We're still puttin' te sea?  Where to?

Kat:  It's a big ocean mate and I no longer care.

Shaddrack *studying her closely*  Not til ye give me your sword and gun.  I'm not likin' this mood you be in.

Kat:  Damn you te 'ell!  *shoving both gun and sword into his hands.*  There satisfied!  Now get out!!!

*Shaddrack, frowning, leaves the room closing the door, then quietly turns the key locking the door.  Heads for the deck.  Inside the room Kat gives way to her tears*

At Manouche and Blake’s house:

Blake *groans, slowly comes to, sits up, shakes head dizzily, tries to focus, tries to remember*  Ohhh, what happened … *looks around room, sees Refugee bring his head up, whine, slowly get to his feet.*  You all right, boy?  *Pats Refugee’s head as the dog approaches him, Refugee waves his tail.  Blake thinks for a moment, then things start to come back to him, and he feels a wave of fear*  Oh, damn.  *He jumps up, runs to Raven’s room, sees he’s not there.  Starts searching house, panic growing.*  Not here, oh my god … and where the hell is Manouche??  *jumps at voice behind him, sees Refugee has changed shape*

Gili:  I think Kat has taken Raven …

Blake *looks at him, and despite his concerns, he can’t help but think once again what a good-looking brother Kat has*  Kat?  Why would she do that?  She knows we’d do anything for him, we’ll take care of him …

Gili:  She fooled me.  I thought she realized we shouldn’t teach the boy shame for what he is.  She's not convinced.

Blake:  Well … she's been through a lot.  I guess it’s a hard lesson for her, learnin’ to trust again.  *He’s interrupted as white raven flies into window, swoops down on floor, shifts into Raven*  Raven!  You … where did you … oh, thank god you’re safe, Manouche would’ve gone crazy if she’d come home an’ found you missin’ …

Gili:  Where’s your mother?

Raven:  I- I don’t know. I was on a ship … I think she’s still there. I … I got scared … I thought I could get help.  She’s with a bad man …  *looks at Blake*  Who’s Shadrack?

Blake *frowns*  Shadrack?  *thinks for a moment, then remembers*  All I know about him is he’s the man who helped Nate escape one of the times we caught him.  At least, that’s what Manouche told me … I -- I’d gone to get the police, I wasn’t there.  *looks at Raven*  Y’mean Kat’s with him?  Why would she throw her lot in with the likes of him?

Gili:  Is he the one who did this, did he take you away?

Raven:  I don’t know.  *thinks, feels tears coming to his eyes, quickly blinks them away so Gili won’t see them*

Gili *puts arm around him*  There’s nothing wrong with being afraid, son.  Especially when you’re worried about someone you love.  Fear is an important sense … but you mustn’t let it rule over you.  Use it, without letting it take over.

Raven *ducks his head, sobs*  I don’t think Mother wants me … I don’t think she wants any of us …

Gili:  She’s forgotten that she deserves certain things in life.  Do you want to help remind her?  *looks down at Raven; Raven stares up at him, tears in his eyes, nods his head vigorously.  Gili smiles at him* Good, then let’s find her.  Now think, you said you were on a ship …  *looks at Blake*

Blake *shrugs*  I’m guessin’ either Manouche’s ship or The Apparition.

Raven:  It wasn’t Manouche’s ship.  *sees worry in Blake’s face*  Manouche is safe.  I don’t know exactly where she is, but she’s safe for now.

Blake *looks at Gili*  That’s it, then, The Apparition.  Good a place to start as any.  *He goes to another part of the house, finds paper and pen, writes a brief note for Manouche in case she comes back.  Comes back into living room, where Gili and Raven stand waiting.  Pauses, walks over to a sideboard, opens drawer, grabs gun.  Turns, looks at Raven.*  I wish I could tell you to stay here, wait for Manouche, stay where it’s safe.  *smiles*  But that’s no place for a brave.  We need you.  *Raven glows from the words, Gili places a hand on his shoulder.  Blake looks at Gili*  Let’s go.

*They leave the house, make their way to the docks, approach The Apparition – dark, quiet, ominous. Daunted by the fact that they don’t hear a sound, don’t see a movement, they stand before it uncertainly, trying to decide on a strategy.*

On The Apparition:

*Time passes, Kat dries her tears.  She's realized that she must do what she can to protect Raven before she can leave.  Approaches door attempts to turn the knob to open it without results. It's locked.*  What is this?  Why would he do that?  *pounds on door frantically shouting*  Let me out!!!  You've got to let me out!!!  There's something I have to do in town.  *She listens for any sound but hears nothing.*  What have I done?  *Crosses to window looks out hopelessly*  Raven I'm sorry.  I broke my word to you that I'd never fail you again.  I'd give up my life to see you one more time.  If only to say goodbye.

On the dock:

*Back at the dock, Blake is standing a ways from them, distracted, trying to come up with a plan.*

.Raven *stammers to Gili*  Mother n-n-needs me.  I saw her.  She's locked in the room where I was.  She's sad and crying. I want to go to h-her.  *looks pleadingly at Gili.*

Gili: Your visions.  Is she alone?

Raven:  yyes.

Gili: She does not trust me.*looks at Raven*  If I allow this, you must remember these words and if you're in danger repeat them.  Say my name, Gili, I need you.  Blood calls to blood.  I will hear and come.  Do you understand?

Raven:  I - I'll remember.  I'll be bbrave.

Gili:  Go then and remember.  *Raven shifts form becomes the white raven and wings his way to The Apparition*

On The Apparition:

*Raven flies into window quickly shifting to his true form before Kat's startled eyes*

Kat:  Raven?  Raven!  *runs to him holds him close*  Oh luv you came back.  Why?  *pulls back, looks into his brown eyes, sees the fear in them*  No it doesn't matter.  You can't stay.

*Raven sees bruise on the side of her face reaches out to touch it.  Kat grabs his hand.*

Raven *trembling*  He h-h-hurt you.

Kat:  It's alright.  You've got to go before he comes back.

Raven:  I can call uncle, he told me how.

Kat:  No, you don't understand.  Shaddrack’s not entirely human.  I'm not entirely certain what he's capable of.  I didn't see it before, but he's changed since he joined with Wilmot.  He's violent and cruel. Go now and tell Gili to forget about me.

*Shaddrack, who has been listening at the door, kicks the door open gun in hand.  Kat and Raven turn in fear.  Shaddrack and another man stand in the door.  Kat pushes Raven behind her.*

Shaddrack:  So he 'as returned.  *smiles, tells the man with him to get ropes and a gag.*

Kat:  Let him go the way he came, Shaddrack, he's no use to you.

Shaddrack: I'll be the one decidin' that.  *man returns; Shaddrack instructs him to bind and gag the boy.  Kat watches helplessly*

Shaddrack *still talking to man*  Take him to the brig and lock him up and keep an eye on ‘im.  *He looks at Raven*  Remember this, boy, any of your fancy shape shifting and your mother will suffer for it.

Kat *suddenly furious*  I'll kill you for this someway somehow!

Shaddrack *smirks*  It's not you that be worryin' me.  The kid's my insurance in case Kidd emerges.  I'm sure she'll think twice 'bout risking the boy's life.  *He crosses to table, picks up a glass, fills it with rum.  With his back to her, he adds something to it.  Picks up glass, turns to her*  Here, drink this.

Kat *snarls*  I don't want it.

Shaddrack:  You no longer have any say.  I give the orders.  You must obey.  Remember the boy will suffer even the slightest disobedience from you.  *Kat sighs, takes glass, drinks*  Now I suggest you lay down.

Kat:  Why's that?

Shaddrack:  The drink was drugged.

Kat:  Drugged?  Why would you do that?  You have my son.

Shaddrack:  I don't want you callin' that shape shiftin' brother of yours either.

Back at the dock:

Blake *saw movement from the corner of his eye, turned in time to see the white raven fly to The Apparition.  Turns to Gili*  He went back?  He’s worried about Kat, isn’t he?

Gili *nods*  I told him how to let me know if he needs me.  Let’s wait and see what happens.  Maybe he’ll be able to talk her into leaving the ship, coming to us.  *looks at Blake as if hoping to see some agreement in his face*

Blake:  Well, let’s give him a little time, but not too long.  I don’t like it.  *shakes head*  I wish I knew where Manouche was.  I’m startin’ to worry.  I know it’d be helpful if she were here, she an’ Raven always seem to be able to communicate with each other.  *They wait a little longer, then Blake speaks again, looks at Gili*  I think we better go up there.  Somethin’s wrong, they would’ve been back by now.  *Gili nods, they cautiously board the ship, Blake pulls his gun.  They start searching the ship as quietly as possible, their nerves on edge from the extreme silence.*

In Abberline’s office:

Manouche *sitting nervously in front of Abberline’s desk, waits as Abberline and Godley shuffle through some papers before getting started with her.  Thinks a minute, then innocently holds up a hand*  Ahhh, ‘scuse me, luvs … mind if I visit th’ loo?

Godley *suspicious*  You have to go now? Can’t it wait?

Manouche *looks modest*  Well, no.  Y’see, mates, bein’ a woman ……..

Godley *brings hands up to his ears, suddenly very squeamish*  Okay, okay, go ahead, no need to go into that!  *waves a hand*  Down the hall.  Be quick about it, get right back.

Manouche *smothers a laugh, smiles*  Ahh, yer a gent t’ be sure!  Much obliged, I won’t be ‘alf a tick.  *She leaves the office, walks quickly down the hall to the restroom, slips into a stall just in time before the resounding headache sends her sinking to the floor*  Owww, BLAST …  *Down on her knees, puts hands over her eyes, tries to concentrate.  Sees a jumble of images, among them Kat, lying on a small bed, looking peaceful enough, but the room is unfamiliar … then she's horrified to see Raven, bound and gagged, in a cell of sorts, being watched intently by a stranger*  Raven!  Oh, bloody ‘ell, what’s happened?  Who’s that?  An’ where are they, that don’t look like th’ Deppville lockup.  *concentrates further, realizes it’s a brig – on a ship.*  Blimey, it looks like Th’ Apparition.  *takes deep breaths through the pain, finally feels it subsiding.  Slowly stands up, emerges from the stall, thinks for a moment.*  Godley an’ Abberline’ll never let me leave now, them an’ their bloody questions.  I ‘ave to sneak out.  *looks around, climbs up on top of radiator to reach small window.  Takes out knife, manages to break window's lock.  Pushes it open as quietly as possible, barely squeezes through, climbs out, drops painfully to the ground below.*  Ow!  *Waits a moment to make sure she wasn’t heard, stands, runs toward the docks*

On The Apparition:

*Raven lays in misery, worrying about his mother.*  We need help  *thinks of his father. Calls to him mentally.*  Father please, if I have any place in your heart, help me.  *tears fall in spite of his best effort.

Manouche *arrives at The Apparition, looks up at it fearfully, hesitates, listens.  Doesn’t hear a sound, but hasn’t forgotten images in her head.  Sighs, starts to board ship.  Thinks hard, tries to send a message to Raven.*  I'm comin', lil' mate ...

At Abberline’s office:

Abberline:  There's one document missing here, the one where Portsmith gave a detailed description of the watch.  Would you get it while Manouche's away.

*Godley leaves for Portsmith's office and Abberline, who has been waiting for the opportune moment to get rid of him, checks the restroom (he's not afraid of anything ...), sees the open window.  Suddenly an image of The Apparition and a man standing on the deck flashes in his mind ... *

On The Apparition:

Manouche *reaches main deck of The Apparition, draws pistol, starts to search ship.  Remembers vision, starts for the brig.  Quietly climbs down stairs to lowest level, approaches brig, stops at doorway.  Peeks around door, sees strange man guarding the cell.  Looks past him, sees Raven bound and gagged in cell, feels a quick rage.  Steps around door, points pistol at man, speaks in low voice*  Don’t make a sound, or by th’ powers, it’ll be the last sound ye make.  Open th’ bloody cell door NOW, mate, an' untie ‘im.  He’d better be unharmed, or ye’ll pay, I promise you.  *Man looks at her furiously, but does what he’s told.  Opens cell, enters, unties Raven, who runs out of cell to Manouche, hugs her*

Manouche *glances down at him, still keeping her pistol on the man*  Y’ sound, luv?  Did they hurt ye? *Raven shakes his head.  Manouche nods, places a hand lovingly against his face for a moment, then walks over to cell, slams door shut, locking the man in.  Pulls keys out of lock, puts them in a pocket* There, see how ye like it, y’bastard.  *Turns to Raven, crouches down to speak to him, puts hands on his shoulders*  Right, lil’ mate, I need ye to do something.  Y’need to shift, fly away, go get help, go find Mr. Blake, 'ave him bring Refugee.  If ye can’t find them, look for Willy.  *pauses, then adds*  Y’might even try Abberline.  Per’aps he’d be willin’ to help, if he can get away from that blasted Godley ...

Raven:  I – I can’t …

Manouche:  Y’can’t?  Why not?

Raven:  He told me not to.  He – he said if I do, he’ll hurt Mother.

Manouche *frowns, fear growing*  Wh-who told ye this, luv?

Raven:  Sh-Shaddrack.  *looks over her shoulder, eyes wide with terror*

Manouche *whispers*  Shaddrack?  Oh, blimey … *sees Raven looking past her, feels her heart sink.*  He … he’s behind me, ain’t he?

Shaddrack:  Smart one, ye are.  *Aiming gun at Manouche, taking her weapons*  Boy, open that cell.  *Raven hesitates, Shaddrack places gun to Manouche's head*  NOW!!!!

*Raven retrieves keys, looking anxiously at Manouche, opens cell.*

Shaddrack:  Get out 'ere, ye bloody fool and tie the boy again.  *watches as the man quickly obeys him. and returns him to the cell, locking it.  Shaddrack shoves Manouche into a separate cell, slams door and locks it.  *sneers*  if she makes a wrong move or opens 'er mouth shoot 'er.  And this time, get it right!!!

Another part of The Apparition:

*Unaware of what's going on down in the brig, Blake and Gili step cautiously along the upper deck, trying doors here and there.  They come to a room that’s locked, look at each other questioningly.*

Blake:  Keep a lookout, I’ll try to break the lock.  *Gili watches as Blake pulls out small knife, prods at doorjamb quietly, eventually picks the lock.  They enter, close door behind them, trying to see through the darkness in the room, make out a figure lying on the bed.*

Gili:  Kat!  Oh, my sister … *They rush to her, try to wake her, check her pulse*

Blake:  She’s breathing, but she’s really knocked out.  Maybe they gave her something.  We need to get her outta here … an’ …

Gili *finishes his thought*  ... we have to find Raven.

*Blake looks at him, then they freeze at a sound outside.  Whispers*  Someone’s coming!  *They quickly hide in a small closet and listen, hearts pounding*

*Abberline heads for the Libertine Trailer in search of Manouche, but doesn't find her.  The ship seems deserted.  A bit farther on the docks, The Apparition looks as quiet as the Libertine Trailer.  Maybe the pirates are all at Chez Roux?  He draws his pistol, and as quietly as possible, he boards The Apparition.  It looks almost abandoned, it is ominously quiet.  All the cabins are empty.  Suddenly he hears a quiet rustle, and someone whispering.  Farther on the deck is a door half open.*

At Abberline’s office:

*Godley returns to Abberline’s office only to find it deserted.  Frustrated, he tosses the document on the desk.*

On The Apparition:

*A man appears, walks up to Shaddrack’s partner, glances at the boy in the cell, then shifts eyes to Manouche, shifts gaze back to other man, smiles.*

Buck:  Earl, old friend, just what is it you think you're doing here.  This is a long ways from Trinity.  Earl, there's only two roads in this world.  And if you're listening to anyone but me, you're on the wrong one.  Now if I were you, I'd be getting back to Trinity before I lose my temper.  *Earl, trembling and shaking, turns and flees like all the demons of hell were at his heels.  Disappears, never to be seen again.*

Buck *unlocks both cells, tells Manouche to untie the boy*  Oh by the way, don't worry about that Shaddrack.  He decided to go for a swim.

Manouche *eyes wide*  We- we're obliged, mate ... *turns to Raven, who's now free*  Right, lil' mate, back to th' plan.  Y' can do it now, there's nothin' to fear.  Shaddrack can't hurt yer mum.  Fly, go find help.

Raven:  Wh-what're you gonna do?

Manouche:  I'm goin' to find Kat, she's 'ere somewhere.  Go on, now.  *smiles encouragingly, kisses him.  He stands back, shimmers, shifts into white raven, flies through the door.  She watches him go, turns to speak to their rescuer, is startled to find he's gone.  Shakes head, starts quietly up the stairs to search for Kat.*

Manouche *pistol drawn, cautiously comes up to main deck, draws up to a stop when she sees a man, his back to her.  Hesitates, looks down the deck in the direction he's gazing, then recognizes him*  Blimey, Inspector!  What're ye doin' here?

*Abberline walks quietly to the stairs with his pistol ready, he heads towards the voices he heard but sees no one. He continues to the stairs and hears that someone is coming up, stop, raises the pistol, ready to shoot*  Stop,  whoever you are!

Silliness ensues as Marja and Pam post simultaneously:

Ooops, Manouche and Abberline got their posts crossed, LOL!!

Manouche *hands up*  Blimey, don't shoot!!  I repeat, Inspector, what th' blazes are ye doin' here??!

*They both lower their pistols and look at each other warily.*

Abberline:  I was called.

ROTFL!!  We did it again!!  OK, who's turn is it?!  Blimey, the beauty of live TV ... !

Manouche *suspicious*  Called by who, mate?

Abberline: Look, I am the one who puts the questions here, alright?  Where is Kat?  What has she done with the boy?  And I really do want to know what is your part in all this.  You seem to pop up everywhere where you definitely are not needed.

Manouche *bristles*  As it is, I'm lookin' fer Kat as well.  An' seein' as how ye seem to consider me presence superfluous, in a word, then I don't see much reason t' be sharin' any further information with ye, regardin' the boy or anything else, fer that matter.  Not needed!  If memory serves, mate, I were given to understand ye sent Godley to ME, to bring me in fer questionin'.  Bloody 'ell!  I wash me hands of ye, Inspector.  Yer welcome to continue yer search on yer onesies.  I'll conduct mine on another part o' the boat ... ship.  *turns to leave*

Abberline *sighing*  I did send for you to ask your help!  And what did you do?  You never gave me a chance, you just vanished into thin air.  I admit that was not fair, but I can't go on with everybody trying to keep me in the dark.  Manouche, I am alone with everybody against me, as it seems.  Listen, I heard that he was in distress and called out to me.

Manouche *stops, turns to him, eyes him suspiciously*  He -- he called out to ye?  *sighs*  Never meant t' disappear from yer office th' way I did.  I, ah ....... well, yer no stranger to visions.  I reckon I can tell you an' ye won't think I'm mad.  I saw th' boy, he were in trouble.  That's why I ran off.  Put yerself in me place, mate.  I'm brought t' yer office, to discuss some undisclosed an' mysterious matters o' business ... do ye really think if I'd been honest about what I'd seen in me head, Godley would've let me leave, an' come to the boy?  He were in trouble, I had to hurry.  *shakes head*  Kat hasn't appreciated me interferin'.  I'm thinkin' per'aps she's right, I should leave this to th' pair o' ye.  It really ain't me business.  *blinks away tears*  It's jus' that ... I've grown very fond o' that boy, savvy?  He an' I, we went through a lot together.  *sniffs, runs hand through hair*  What's say we search th' ship, find Kat, an' then I'll leave ye both to it, hash it out as ye will.  Do we 'ave an accord?

At Portsmith’s castle:

Corso *reporting to Portsmith*  ... and then I lost him.  They had Manouche in the office for an interrogation about those stolen watches.  Then Godley asked me about that description of the watch, and while I found it for him, both Manouche and the Inspector had vanished.  Probably together.

Portsmith:  What the hell is he up to!  He has not cared about that watch case at all in a long while, and now all of a sudden he takes it up with Manouche!

Corso:  You got to admit that Manouche is a rather obvious suspect ...

Portsmith *not listening*  Rubbing shoulders with the pirates, as it were.  You are right, he can't be trusted.  You have to go after him, Dean.  It is not over yet, and I need more answers.  I am not yet sure whose blood we need.

Corso:  But ... but ... now that Marchand is dead...

Portsmith:  Fool!  Marchand is not dead, he is just trapped in the soulbox, and as soon as I figure out whose blood it still needs, I am going to be able to open the box and make the souls my servants!  And take over the world!

*Corso stares at her in utter disbelief, feels a chill down his spine*

On The Apparition:

Abberline:  Let's search the ship, we’ve got to find the boy and Kat.  But when we find them, I still need you, Manouche, Kat does not want to reason with me at all.

*On the bed, Kat moans*  Raven. *manages to open her eyes barely*  Must save him.  *with great effort she slides off the bed and immediately collapses to the floor, groans*

Manouche and Abberline *hear the noise, look at each other, frowning.  They draw pistols, move slowly to the half-open door of the room, peer around doorway*

Manouche:  KAT!  *runs in, drops to floor next to Kat*  Easy, mate.  *whispers to her*  No worries, Raven's safe, I promise ye.  *looks up, startled, at noise coming from closet.  Stares, mouth open, as Blake and Gili emerge from their hiding place*  By th' powers, Mr. Blake!  *sighs with relief as he walks over to her, crouches next to her*

Blake:  We think Kat was drugged, but other than that, she seems okay ...  *smiles lovingly at Manouche*

Gili *looks at Abberline warily, says nothing*

Kat *tries to rise and fails*  But Shaddrack 'ad 'em.  What 'appened?  Where is he?  *spots Abberline, sneers*  What's 'e doin' 'ere?

Manouche *sits on floor with Kat, puts arms around her soothingly*  Shhh, no worries, mate.  Raven an' I, we escaped.  There were a stranger come help us, savvy?  I never seen him before, an' he were gone before I could even thank 'im.  Like th' bloody Lone Ranger.  He says we don't need t' worry about Shaddrack now.  *pauses, lowers voice*  Kat, Raven is safe, I swear.  He's ... well, I sent 'im back to th' house.  *nods toward Abberline, speaks a little louder*  Th' Inspector here ... he, ah, showed up on 'is own accord, as it were.  He's wantin' to talk to ye, an' we all bloody well know what it's about.  But ye been through a lot, luv.  So whether ye prefer to engage in any long, drawn-out chats at this particular juncture is entirely up to you.  Mr. Blake an' I, we could be on our way.  This don't concern us ... it's between yerself an' Abberline, possibly Gili, 'ere.  *looks up at Abberline*

Kat *looks at Abberline, not for the first time taking in how fetching he is, frowns*  No no no!  Don't be leavin' me 'ere.  There be nothin' to talk about not now or e'er!  I want te see Raven.

Abberline *turns and looks at Gili*  Who is he?

Manouche *can't help but grin*  He's been generally trustin' o' ye from th' beginnin', Inspector.  That's Gili ... ye know him best as Refugee.  *Gili remains silent, looks very solemn, holds out hand to Abberline.  Manouche wants to laugh at his expression because it reminds her so much of Raven, but she refrains.  She inwardly sends out a thought to Raven, hoping he'll receive it, telling him to stay away.*

*Everyone in the room looks up at the sound of a fluttering of wings.  A white raven enters the room, swoops down onto the floor next to Kat and Manouche, shimmers, and turns into Raven.  He looks around at everyone for a moment, takes everyone in -- Blake, Gili, Manouche, his mother -- then looks at Abberline for a longer time.  He starts to speak, stops, turns to Kat, bursts into tears and throws his arms around her. Manouche, still holding Kat, reaches a hand out to stroke his hair.*  S'alright, lil' mate, s'alright ...

Raven *sobs*  M-Mother, are you all right?  I -- I wasn't afraid.  *to Manouche*  I- I'm sorry, I couldn't stay away ...

Manouche:  No worries, luv, ye did everythin' jus' fine.  *glances up at Abberline, swallows*  Inspector ... this is Raven.  Son, this is Inspector Abberline ... I believe ye've seen 'im before.

Kat *holding Raven tightly*  T'is alright luv.  Hush now, it's all o'er.  We can go 'ome now and forget it e'en 'appened.  Please sweet, stop yer cryin'.  *glares at Abberline over Raven's head*  No one will e'er be 'urtin' ye again.

*Raven turns to look at Abberline and they stare at each other in the eye, both of them unsure and wary, Raven searching for the shock and revulsion he dreads, Abberline, afraid to frighten the boy away.*

Abberline:  Raven, I have been waiting for long to meet you.

*Kat wants to get up and take Raven away but the drug is still too strong within her.  But most of all, she fears that Raven might hate her for keeping him from a father he so longs for.*

*Seeing the white bird morph into a beautiful boy has removed all the doubts Abberline had before about Raven being his.  He remembers how he heard tales of his great-great-grandmother in Dorset who was accused of witchcraft and condemned to be burned on a stake.  One of the accusations against her was that she could 'go into a bird' as it was said.  He always thought that it was just a metaphor, or an empty accusation, but now he wonders ....

Raven *stops his tears, looks at Abberline*  Are ... are you my father?

Abberline:  I am, if you let me be.  I would be proud of a son like you, and I regret that I did not know about you until recently.  I have missed so much... *falters*

Manouche *murmurs to Kat*  Love with an open hand, mate.  He'll always come back to ye.

Kat *reluctantly loosens her hold on Raven.  He walks over to stand before Abberline, staring at him with his dark, solemn eyes.  Takes Abberline's hand in his, concentrates, is able to see a deep sorrow for something that happened in the recent past, something involving a woman and child, but it's vague ... and something else, about an ancestor accused of witchcraft.  He drops Abberline's hand, looks at him with deep sympathy in his eyes.  Though he still feels uncertain, he senses no revulsion from Abberline; he cautiously moves closer to him, puts his arms around him comfortingly.*

Kat *whispers to Manouche*  What if he prefers 'em te me?  *cringes*

Manouche *smiles*  That's where trust comes in, luv.  That lil' bloke has more love in 'im than any child I've ever seen.  He an' I talked a lot when Nate were holdin' us captive ...  He wants a mum an' a dad, he don't want to 'ave to choose.  Ye'll see, mate, it'll be all right.  *watches Abberline carefully*

Kat:  What of Portsmith?  She already be talkin' of takin' 'em from me and givin' 'em te Abberline.  Think you Abberline would turn that down.  Where would I be then?  Sorry, I be 'avin' no trust in Abberline.

Manouche *smile fades slightly*  I -- I'd fergotten about that, I 'ave to admit.  'Course, when I were talkin' about trust, I meant trustin' Raven to always want ye in his life, savvy?  But th' fact o' the matter is, luv, ye an' the Inspector have a child together, an' yer both goin' to have to decide what's to be done about 'im.  As fer th' Inspector's take on it all ... blimey, I don't know 'im well enough to know what he'll do.  I would hope he'd want to do right by you an' Raven, an' not tear ye apart now that ye've found one another after all this time.  *looks at Abberline again, shakes her head*  Bloody 'ell, Inspector, say SOMEthin'.

Abberline *lifts his hands and carefully, almost reluctantly embraces Raven, still fearing he might want to flee from him.  He looks anxiously at Kat, with precisely the same dark solemn eyes that Raven has.  Raven turns, looks at Kat and Manouche, beams*

Manouche *looks at him, smiles*  Well, lil' mate, ye've got yer dad's eyes, to be sure!  Y'know, parents sometimes can't agree on matters ... but th' best ones always manage to reach an accord fer their kids.  I'm sure th' Inspector an' yer mum would both agree that ye deserve two parents.  Am I right?  *shifts eyes to Abberline*

Abberline *looks thoughtfully at Kat, who avoids his eyes*  We need to have a private talk, Kat ....

*Suddenly the door bursts open and Dean Corso enters, he stops and takes in the whole scene with a grin.*  My my, what a beautiful little family reunion.  This amazes me, Inspector, ‘cause I remember Kat was not very fast to save you from the hands of Nate ....  And right she is, you are very flighty when it comes to women, Inspector.  Very flighty indeed.  Unless I have misinterpreted this adorable scene totally.  Just chatting up the pirates?  They'll throw you to the sharks when you turn your back on them.

*Abberline turns towards him with a cold glint in his eyes.*

Corso:  Commander Portsmith happens to be very, very displeased with you at the moment.  So she sent me to aid you in your investigation, as it were, so here I am.

Abberline:  I see.  Then it would be best for you to go and make the report.  The investigation is over.  I have searched the ship thoroughly and recovered the watch.  But the culprit managed to escape … *shrugs* … and as it was just some pirate after booty, I would advise against trying to find him.  Must be in
Tortuga by now.  Oh, and the watch ... I believe I gave it to Manouche while I tried to chase the pirate.  Manouche, would you be so kind as to give Mr. Corso the gold watch of Commander Portsmith.  *Manouche takes the watch from her pocket and hands it to Abberline, who tosses it to Corso.*  The case is closed.  Now you can leave.

Corso:  Oh, just an interrogation of pirates then?  Well, you will be going with me, since the case is over.

Abberline:  I have a private matter to settle.

Corso:  But do I dare to leave you amid the enemy?  Now, you are a brave man, Inspector, but something has clouded your brain.  Commander Portsmith …

Abberline *interrupting*  … has nothing to say in the matters of my private life.  Not anymore.

Corso *shrugs*  Your funeral.

Manouche *watches Corso leave, looks at Abberline, astonished*  Inspector … I- I don’t know what t’ say.  Ye didn’t turn me in … cheers, mate.  *looks at Kat*  Kat, I’ll do as ye wish … yer me mate.  But I’m thinkin’ a private chat between th’ pair o’ ye is in order.  He stood up fer us against Corso, that’s no small thing.  Per'aps he deserves a chance after all.  Mr. Blake an’ I, we could take Raven back to th’ house, leave ye both to it.  Say th’ word, luv.

Kat:  I got eyes and ears.  I know what 'e done.  If Raven wants te see 'em I'll not be standin' in the way.  I see no need for a private talk.  He can see Raven as 'e wishes and I'll say naught 'bout it.  * kneels down to Raven*  Luv, stay with Manouche, visit yer fa ... Abberline when ye want.  Ye 'ave te understand  dearest, I been tryin' te be what I'm not and it's bein' a dead end street.  No worries, luv, I'll be always be near at 'and.  *kisses his cheek and stands.  Looks around at others in room*  Now I'm thinkin' I'll be on my way.  I'm tired and 'ave been much too long from home.

Manouche:  Kat, wait, ye ain't fully recovered, luv.  Where ye goin'?  Ye should stay 'ere, this bein' The Apparition, we're th' ones who should leave.  Savvy?  *looks at her carefully*  Can I do anythin' at all t' make ye feel better, mate?

Blake:  She's right, Kat, you were drugged, you shouldn't be alone.  At least let one of us help you, stay with you for awhile.

Abberline *to Manouche*  She will change her mind.  I know it.  She won't listen to me.  I must return to the office...  *to Raven*  I am waiting for you, please do not forget me.  *Turns abruptly and leaves*

Raven *concentrates, sends message to Abberline*  I won't forget you, Father, I promise.  I'll come see you.

Manouche *calls after him*  No worries, Inspector, ye can see 'im anytime ye want.  *looks at Blake, troubled*

At Portsmith’s office:

*Portsmith is sitting at her desk and reading a report that Corso has just handed her. The farther she reads, the madder she gets, then she crumples up the paper and throws it on the floor*  Now this is outrageous!  Unknown pirate.  And Manouche had the watch just because he gave it to her.  Unbelievable.  Corso, this is crap!

Corso:  But you have the watch now, Commander.

Portsmith:  Oh yes, the watch.  I should have known it was Manouche and I will get her for this!  *Takes a look at the expensive watch and suddenly smashes it against the desk*  When he comes back, I'll better have a word with him ...

On The Apparition:

Kat *watches the exchange*  Take Raven and go 'ome.  I be clear 'eaded enough.  I be much preferrin' me own company at the moment.  Savvy???

Gili:  I'll stay here with you, my sister.  I won't take no for an answer.  *looks at Manouche and Blake*  Take Raven home, he needs to rest.

Raven *comes up to Kat, throws his arms around her, hugs her tight, tears in his eyes*  I love you, Mother.  I -- I won't see my father if it'll hurt you.

Kat *looks down at Raven* No worries, sweet, if it's makin' ye 'appy, that's all that matters.  *glares at Gili.*

Manouche *feeling uncomfortable*  A-aye, well, we'll be on our way, then.  *hugs Kat, kisses her cheek, whispers*  Take care, mate, an' don't worry 'bout Raven, he'll be fine. We'll ... we'll come see about ye tomorrow, lil' mate's all in.  *smiles wanly, turns to go.  Blake pats Kat on the shoulder, shakes hands with Gili.  They take Raven and leave The Apparition.*

At Manouche and Blake’s house:

*Manouche, Blake and Raven return to the house from The Apparition, saying little.  By the time they arrive, Raven is so sleepy he's ready to drop; they put him to bed, Manouche kisses him, they secure the windows, close the door softly.  They go to the living room, where Blake pours drinks*

Manouche:  There's somethin' wrong.  I feel it ...

Blake *brings her a glass*  Do you see something?

Manouche *shakes head*  No.  I can’t put me finger on it.  I’m worried, love, I’m worried fer all of us.

Blake:  All of us?  What about?  Shaddrack’s gone, Nate’s locked up again.  *sits close to her on couch*  I know things aren’t great with Kat an’ Abberline, but that could change.  Raven may have a way of easin' that situation.

Manouche:  That’s one o’ me more concrete worries, to be sure.  I -- I feel so bad about it all.  I didn’t mean t’ push Kat to face th’ Inspector, jus’ tryin’ to help.  Raven wants to know both his parents.  I’m afraid I made a mess of everything.  *sighs*  What’s to become o’ lil’ mate?  Kat don’t want th’ Inspector to ‘ave him, yet she don’t feel she can keep him.  She wants ‘im to stay with us, but they could take ‘im away from us so easily …  *takes big drink*

Blake:  I’ve been thinkin’ about that.  I’ve been thinkin’ about it a lot.  We could make it so they can’t take him away from us … that is, if Kat approves of this idea.  I suppose Abberline should have some say on it, too.  Anyway, I was thinkin’ … we could get married, and adopt him.  *closes his eyes as Manouche spits out spray of rum*

Manouche *coughing and spluttering*  Bloody ‘ell!!  *wipes her eyes, stares at him*  D-did ye hear what ye said??

Blake *grins*  Yeah, I was right here, I heard every word!

Manouche:  But … love, that’s no reason t’ get married.

Blake:  I know, honey.  I’ve got the top reason covered.  I love you, I want to spend my life with you.  Raven or no Raven.

Manouche *stares at him again, then stands, starts pacing*  Y – ye don’t want t’ marry me, dearest.  I’m not … well … there are things y’ don’t know about me …

Blake *watches her pace*  You’re not gonna start that “damaged goods” nonsense again, are you?  Wish I’d killed that damn Nate when I had the chance, puttin’ that in your head … *feels anger rising, pushs it away, looks up at her*  I told you, it doesn’t matter what’s happened in your past, I don’t care.  *hesitates, is afraid to ask*  You … you love me, don’t you?

Manouche *looks at him quickly, her expression soft*  Oh, aye, I love you with all me heart …

Blake:  Well, that’s all that matters.  *stands, comes over to her, takes her in his arms, she avoids his eyes*  I love the idea of givin' Raven a home, but that’s not why I’m doin’ this.  I’ve been thinkin’ about it for awhile.  I thought about it even more when Willy an’ Madame made me godfather to one of the twins.  I want us to be together, I want everyone to know it, I want us to have a family of our own, maybe give Raven a lil’ brother or sister.  *smiles*  I have to admit, that Cameron put it in my head even more.  What a cute kid.  *tries to look at her, she’s still turning her face away*  I wouldn’t change a thing about you, or about us.  *puts hand under her chin, smile fades as he sees tears in her eyes*  Honey, what is it?

Manouche *pushes away from him, stumbles over to window, stares out, wraps her arms around herself as if chilled*  I – I can’t ‘ave children, love.

Blake *stunned silence, then whispers*  You … you can't ...

Manouche:  Ye heard.  Somethin’ … somethin’ were done t’ me when I were younger, savvy?  I weren’t too experienced at th’ pirate trade yet, an’ I got a bit careless … I crossed some very dangerous men, an’ … well, never mind.  So y’see, Nate were right about me, in a manner o’ speakin’.  An’ … it’s messed with me head in ways from time t’ time.  It’s why I were feelin’ suicidal th’ night Madame learned she were pregnant … I never told Lisa an’ Kidd all that.  They saved me life, an’ asked no questions, bloody good mates.  M --most times, I’m sound with it, I accept it as me lot in life.  But every now an’ then, I confess, it throws me.  So y'see ... ye could find yerself a lovely girl, one who ain’t so crazy, one who could give ye …... I – I know ye want children, an’ ye should ‘ave ‘em.  But ye won’t be ‘avin’ ‘em with me.  *lowers head, sobs*  D- deep apologies, love, I should’ve told ye straight away.  Reckon I were a coward.  *cries softly, trembling*

Blake *comes over to her, stands behind her, embraces her tightly*  Listen to me.  It doesn’t matter.  Above all else, I want you.  You’re on my mind all the time, our life together is as natural as breathing … Do y’know, sometimes when I’m writin’ verse, I write our names on the page, just ‘cause I like to look at ‘em together?  *turns her to him, takes her face in his hands*  We can still have children, honey, even if they’re not ours.  If Kat is okay with this idea, we’ll have Raven, an’ we’ll make it so he can see her an’ his dad any time he wants.  What a gift that would be for th’ poor lil’ guy, after all he’s been through.  Think of it!  An’ Willy an’ Madame’s twins, they’ll be around all the time.  An’ … well, there are a lotta kids out there who need homes.  *looks deep into her eyes*  I love you, Manouche, I don’t care about anything else.  Please say yes.

Manouche *stares at him through her tears*  By th’ saints … y’ mean it, don’t you?  Either that, or ye got bloody beautiful manners …

Blake *laughs, kisses her deeply.  Holds her, looks into her eyes*  So … do we have an accord?

Manouche:  Are – are ye sure, love?  *Blake nods.  Her eyes tear up again, but she’s smiling*  Well, then … aye … we ‘ave an accord, Mr. William Blake.  *She wraps her arms around his neck, they kiss passionately*

Raven *in his room, sound asleep, smiles at a beautiful dream, where there’s no discord between his mother and father … Manouche and Blake are in the kitchen, making a big dinner for everyone ... he’s painting an Indian design on the wall of his room, his very own room … and True Dreamer sits nearby, smiling at him, mixing colors for him to use … *

On The Apparition:

Kat *stares at Gili*  Brother would ye do us a favor?  Could ye fetch Ichy for me?

Gili *studying Kat*  Do you believe he'd be able to ease your troubled mind?

Kat sighs*  Your fetchin' 'em would be a very good start.

Gili:  In that case, I'll see if I can find him.  I won't be gone long.  *turns, exits the room and leaves the ship.*

Kat *crosses room to table, glances absently at the various items scattered upon it.  In one swift motion she sweeps her arm across table, sending the contents of it crashing to the floor.  Departs the ship.*

At From Hell Court:

Malachi *sitting at bar in one of the taverns in From Hell Court*  I understand congratulations are in order.  *Glances up at Manouche, standing beside him*

Manouche *sits down next to him*  I ain't even told Willy an' Madame yet.  Y’ always throw me with that ability o’ yers, mate.  *signals bartender, orders drink*

Malachi:  It’ll never work, you know.  Oh, you can get married, no law against that.  But you can forget about adoption right now, an’ you know it.  *drinks *

Manouche:  I don’t know it, nor do ye.

Malachi:  Then why are you here?

Manouche *starts to speak, then stops herself.  Bartender brings her drink, she frowns into the glass before drinking.*

Malachi:  You’re here because you have a nagging feeling about something.  An’ it’s well you do, ‘cause there are things goin’ on, all of which have to do with this crazy idea of adopting that kid.  One word, Manouche … Portsmith.

Manouche *looks at him quickly, surprised*  Portsmith?  What’s she ‘ave to do with it?

Malachi *lights cigarette, offers one to Manouche*  Plenty.  She’s the high power around here.  She’s really put out with Inspector Abberline right now … an’ she’s gearin’ up to make a major example of you.

Manouche: Me?  Wh- what for?

Malachi *smirks*  It’d be easier to list the things she likes about you.  She’s been lookin’ for a reason to rake you over the coals for some time, an’ this watch business was the last straw.

Manouche:  Blimey, that??  That were jus’ a little joke.  I ‘ad no intention o’ keepin’ it, or sellin’ it.  It were a prank … I, ahh, jus’ fergot t’ get it back to her, is all.

Malachi:  Well, she don’t see it that way.  An’ Abberline’s in big trouble with her for his recent consorting with you pirates.  She sure as hell didn’t buy his report on the watch, not for a second.  What I’m saying is, if you an’ Blake try to suddenly go respectable so you can presumably adopt a kid … ANY kid, not just Raven … you think Portsmith’ll let that happen?  She’s the law, an’ to her, you’ll always be a lowlife pirate an’ scallywag.  It’ll be a cinch for her to convince a panel that you’re not suitable parent material.  *holds up hand*  I know, I know, you can talk about legal rights all you want, you can get the Wonkas to help you … but bottom line, Portsmith has final control over all that.  Being appointed godparents is one thing, there’s not much she can do about that.  This is quite another.  Give it up, it ain’t gonna happen.  You’ve come to me with an uneasy feeling, an’ all I can do is tell you, yes, it’s justified.

Manouche *stares at him, swallows, takes a long drink*  So, then … what d’ ye suggest?

Malachi *shrugs*  Get married, enjoy your life … an’ quit meddling in that kid’s welfare.  He should be with his mother, he’s not yours to decide what’s to happen to him.  You want kids, you’ll have to leave Deppville.  Portsmith’ll never allow it here.  Matter of fact, you’ll be lucky if you can just stay out of her hair.  Maybe it’ll blow over to some extent … but I’d give her a wide berth for the time being, if I were you.  Savvy?

Manouche *nods, feeling numb*  Savvy.  *signals bartender, orders small bottle to take out*

Malachi:  Sorry I can’t give you any good news.  There just isn’t any.  Not on this.

Manouche *stands, puts money on the bar, pockets bottle, looks at him, face pale*  Obliged fer the advice.  *slowly walks out of the bar, into the street. Malachi watches her go, shakes head, orders another drink*

In another part of the same tavern:

*Inspector Abberline sits in a small place at From Hell court smoking, in deep thoughts.  Suppressing the urge to drop into his favourite den, he walked into this disreputable tavern and ordered a bottle of absinthe.  On the steps down to the basement where the opium den is located, he hesitated and turned back.  He knows that someone will see him going there, and Kat will know about it and use it against him.  Doubts have been nagging him ever since he left The Apparition.  There is no way he can be sure that Kat keeps her word, and he feels fooled once again.*

Outside the tavern:

*Kat having followed Abberline, stands outside trying to decide if she should enter. Wondering if there might be another way.  Something she'd missed.  If she suggested this would Abberline agree?  And even if he did agree ... how could she be certain he'd stick to the agreement ... She couldn't.  There has to be another way. Turns from the door and walks into the night.*

Back inside:

*After two hours, Abberline is still in the same place. Since Raven is living with Kat, she has all the power over him.  What happens if she forbids Raven to meet him?  Blackmails him?  He can almost hear the voice in his head:  I promise I won't see him if it hurts you ...  It is not possible to reason with Kat, but Abberline decides that he must make her talk with him at last.*

Malachi *still at bar, had seen Abberline pass through the tavern, senses his struggle.*  Poor bastard.  *Suddenly realizes, with surprise, that he's contemplating introducing himself to Abberline, offering some assist; shakes his head as if to clear it.*  Idiot.  Stay out of it, follow your own advice.  *Thinks of Manouche, knows she's hurting over it all, sends her a thought.*  Steer clear of it, Gypsy, it's not your affair.  They'll only resent you for your good intentions.  Let them sort it out.  *finishes drink, orders another.*

At Manouche and Blake’s house:

Manouche *after talk with Malachi, returns home with a heavy heart.  Enters, finds everything quiet; Blake and Raven are asleep.  Doesn't bother to turn on lights, pours a drink.  Looks out window absently for a few minutes, then decides to check on Raven.  Approaches his room, surprised to see a light on underneath the door.  Opens door, sees him writing something.*  Eh, lil' mate, why aren't ye asleep?

Raven *startled*  I ... I was ... I was writing a note.

Manouche *raises eyebrows, then realizes she knows exactly what he's talking about.  Nods slowly.*  Ye 'ave to do this, don't ye?  *Raven nods*  Very well, luv.  Ye've come of age.  Do what ye must, take great care.  I told Kat, love with an open hand ... I 'ave to follow that, as well.  Stay safe, me brave lil' mate.  *She reaches around her neck, removes one of her good luck pendants, gives it to him.  She hugs him, kisses him, smiles, manages to hide her tears until she leaves the room.*

Raven *watches her go, then turns to window.  Unlocks it, opens it, stands back, shimmers, turns into white raven.  Hops up on windowsill, flies out window, heading for either The Apparition or Kat's house, wherever he can find his mother.*

At Portsmith’s office:

Portsmith *has called Sergeant Godley to her office*  So the pirates have manages to snare him.  Very clever of them to use the kid for that, very clever.  And he really believes it is his?  And Kat doesn't let him see the boy?

Godley:  So it would seem.

Portsmith:  Oh good ... instead of attending to his duties, he's chasing Kat.  I can't see either of them as a parent, a shovel-wielding maniac, an opium addict.  But maybe we could use this.  If the Inspector were to be the legal guardian, it might put a rift into this new friendship of his …

Godley:  But you can't …

Portsmith:  Dismissed!

Manouche *walks into Security office building, up to Portsmith's office, door is closed; she listens, hears a second voice.  Sighs, resolutely knocks on door*

Sergeant Godley *opens the door.*  Are you here on behalf of the watch?  *whispering*  Commander is a bit mad about that, so watch out.

Manouche *whispers back*  Obliged, Godley.  *louder voice*  Me business is with th' Commander, if she's free.  *steps in room, waits for Portsmith to respond*

Portsmith:  Godley, let her in.  *Manouche enters, Portsmith lets her wait for a while, reading some paper as if it were important, then looks at her.*  Well, Manouche.  Don't keep me waiting, I am busy.

Manouche:  Right ... I'm 'ere to, ahh, expedite matters, as it were.  I have it on good authority that ye’ve been desirin’ me presence fer one thing or another.  If I’ve been misinformed, I can leave right now.  However, I may 'ave information you can use.  I'm willin' to discuss it, but I have a request o' me own.

Portsmith:  Are you trying to make a deal with me?  A request?  Maybe you would be so kind and state it then.  *looking at her papers again*  There is a lot of unfinished business.  The watch.  The Fiji connection.  And sightings about wolves that seem to dwell on board pirate ships ...

Manouche:  Aye, I'm aware there's unfinished business.  I believe I could be particularly helpful in supplyin' information about Fiji.  Not sure how beneficial it'd be to ye, but I spent a lot o' time there, an' I saw an' learned plenty.  Here's me deal ...  *moves forward toward desk*  ... I'll do me best to answer any an' all questions ye put to me ... long as they don't endanger one o' me mates.  In return, I want ye to promise to let Kat have final say in what happens with that boy o' hers.  An' I'll want it in writin', mate ... not that I don't trust ye, mind, but after all, we're shrewd women o' business an' should conduct ourselves as such.  *smiles a rather bleak smile*  Do we 'ave an accord?

Portsmith:  Now this is interesting.  What is your business with the boy?  Tell me why Kat isn't here herself?  As far as I understand, there is also a father to this boy, who happens to be Inspector Abberline from what I have heard.  Should he not have his say in the matter too?  Very interesting.  You are making now a request on Kat's behalf, and I have got the impression that you were on friendly terms with Inspector Abberline … but I am delighted to hear that you have just been conducting 'shrewd business' with him.  Might be a disappointment for him, but that's what you get socializing with pirates.  I never make any hasty decisions, and this is a very important matter, don't you think so?  A child needs good parents.

Manouche:  Th' Inspector knows that Kat's me mate, an' her considerations come first as far as I've concerned.  I were straight with him on that from th' beginning.  I worked on his behalf as much as I could.  Truth be told, I believe he's a good man an' wants to do right by th' boy.  But me thoughts on that issue don't matter, an' they hold no sway.  Now it's up to him an' Kat to work it out between themselves.  Th' boy's wise beyond his years, an' every time he's given a choice, he turns to his mother.  I happen to care a great deal fer him ... we went through quite an experience together.  So I'd like t' help him be wherever he wants to be.  An' that seems t' be with his mum.  Yer right, Commander, a child needs good parents, an' this is a very important matter.  Ye can take some time to think it over, if y' prefer.  *stands*  Ye can always send fer me once ye decide.

Portsmith:  I will think it over.  One more thing before you leave, Manouche.  How come the watch was in your pocket?  You did not happen to see the pirate who stole it, did you?  Hm … in a ship filled with pirates, it is quite a surprise that no one else except the Inspector saw him.

Manouche *grins*  Aye, well, that's one too many questions, Commander.  Like I said, if we strike a bargain, I'll be fer passin' along all manner o' information.  Let's jus' leave it at this ... *grin fades, suddenly looks very serious* ... th' Inspector's a fine man, an' yer bloody lucky t' have him on th' force.  Very sharp, he is.  Personally, I hope he an' Kat can reach an accord.  *tips hat slightly*  Glad ye got yer watch back in one piece, mate.  *turns, leaves office*

Portsmith *picks up the watch she smashed against the desk before, looks at it in disgust and throws it at the wall so it shatters to pieces.*  Pirates making requests, what insolence ... But I'll get her nailed for this ... and he has to answer for what he did ...

Godley *waiting for Manouche behind the door, grabs her, whispers in an angry voice*  Why ever did you bring that miserable matter up with Commander?  She is already mad at the Inspector, and you just made it worse for him by calling him a good man ... You are not helping him with it, on the contrary.  If the Commander gets the impression that pirates regard him as a good man, it means to her that he has switched sides. You should have been more careful!  *Godley has been searching for the Inspector but had no luck so far.  He's decided to convince the Inspector to give in with the child, just like he did with baby Alice and Mary Kelly.*

Manouche *growing angry, replies in harsh whisper*  Bloody ‘ell, take yer hands off me!  I’ve about had it with explainin’ meself to everyone, especially blokes like you who ‘ave no regard fer me or me feelin’s on anything.  Jerkin’ me about like I’m dirt.  *shakes his hands off*  I have me reasons fer doin’ what I did, an’ until ye can treat me with a little respect, them reasons ain’t yers fer knowin’, savvy?  I’m playin’ close to th’ vest from here on in, Godley … ironic, seein’ as how I’m fast approachin’ a point where I have nothin’ to lose.  *pauses, lost in grim thoughts.  Sighs, turns to him*  Y’ haven’t found him yet, have ye?  I’ll take ye where he is, then I’m leavin’, an’ don’t go tellin’ him I led ye to ‘im.  C’mon, if yer comin’.  *turns abruptly, walks out of building toward From Hell Court, grumbling*  Bloody Deppville’s finest.

At From Hell Court:

*Godley runs after Manouche, she leads him to the tavern she was in earlier, passes the bar, waves angrily at Malachi, who looks at her, surprised.  Comes to door leading to lower level, indicates stairs to Godley.*  He’s down there, Sergeant.  *expression softens*  G-good luck, mate.  I know ye don’t trust me or like me much, but with all sincerity, I hope ye can help him, I honestly do.  *tears start to fill her eyes; frowns, turns abruptly, walks very fast through tavern to street.*

At Deppville Beach:

*Kat stands on the beach staring at the ocean, thinking. What's done is done.  Considers returning to The Apparition, discards the idea, not wanting to have to face Gili.  Home then … decides that maybe it's time to return to Sparrow Lane.*

*High up in a tree near the beach, Raven, in white raven shape, sits on a top branch, having placed himself inside the foliage so he won't be easily seen.  He watches his mother intently, determined to follow wherever she goes.*
