You can keep doing that forever, the dog is never going to move.

Being where Refugee shows there’s more – deliciously more – to him than meets the eye … Willy and Madame make an astute observation over brunch … Corso becomes mightily stressed, and even a dip in Deppville Harbor will not soothe his fever'd brow! ... Colonel encounters some strange and nasty creatures ... Kidd and Manouche plan to rescue Abberline from Nate … Raven beats them to it, revealing his shapeshifter talents … Godley and Abberline cannot agree to disagree … and Kat, disillusioned, begins to wonder if all she can trust in is her trusty shovel.

At the Wonkas’ factory:

*Blake, Manouche and Raven stand outside the Wonkas’ factory door.*

Blake:  Y’sure they won’t mind us just droppin’ in like this?

Manouche:  No worries, they ignore th' doorbell when they don’t wish t’ be disturbed.  *grins*  Willy don’t like to admit it, but he enjoys surprise invitations.  So much o’ his life is controlled, innit?  Y'know, in some ways, I think me particular brand o' chaos has been good fer him!  *Looks at Raven, winks, reaches over, rings doorbell.*

Willy:  Coming, I'm coming!  *opens door slightly, sees Raven, arches brow, gives a bit of a frown*

Madame: *comes to door*  Willy don’t be rude.  *opens the door all the way*  Ah Manouche!  Good morning!  How are you?  *sees Raven*  Ay little fella' who might you be?

Manouche *puts hands on Raven's shoulders*  Madame, Willy, mate ... th' pair o' ye haven't been around much lately, so you've missed some news.  This is Raven ... he were with me, bein' held by Nate, an' he was brave beyond words.  *Gives his shoulders a squeeze.*  He's also Kat's son.

Blake:  We're goin' to Chez Roux for brunch, wanted to see if you'd like to join us.  We have lots to catch up on.  *smiles*

Raven *looking very solemn, offers hand to Willy and Madame*  Pleased to meet you.

Willy: *holds back, looks at Raven's hand, arches brow*

Madame: *rolls eyes at Willy, take his hand, shakes it*  Excellent to meet you young man.  *gets on one knee, whispers at Raven*  Don’t mind Mr. Wonka, he had a bad morning.

Willy: *rolls eyes, looks at Blake, smiles*  Brunch?  *sound of food makes his mouth water*

Madame: *stands up with a bit of a struggle*  Oy my back...  *smiles at Blake*  sounds like an excellent idea Blake!  Shall we?

Manouche *to Raven, motioning toward Willy, who's still looking a little squeamish*  Lil' mate, Willy 'ere is a chocolatier, an' this is his factory.  Ye've had Wonka candy at one time or another, 'aven't ye?

Raven *looking up at factory, eyes wide*  Yeah ... but we didn't get into town too much when I was little.

Manouche:  D'ye have a favorite?

Raven:  I like dark chocolate.  Guess I like it all ...  *wrinkles nose*  ... but I hate gum.

Manouche *smothers laugh, looks at Willy, eyebrows raised*

Blake *grins at Willy's expression*  C'mon, get your coats, let's go.  *Willy raises brows at Raven*

At Chez Roux:

*They take one of the larger booths, Willy and Madame on one side, Blake and Manouche on the other, Raven between them*

Manouche *looking at menu*  Blimey, what t' choose ... *looks at Willy, grins*  Ye'll be orderin' pretty much one o' everything, as usual, mate?  *nudges Raven*  Yer about t' see a world class foodist in action, son, so watch yer fingers!

Raven *looks at Willy*  True Dreamer always said, Beware the man who strives to conceal his love of the everyday.  *Smiles his serious little grown-up smile, returns to studying the menu.*

Blake *catches Manouche's eye over Raven's head, again trying to keep from laughing at Willy's reactions*  Sooo, the usual, coffee, juice, some eggs ...

Willy: *glances at Raven again, then goes back to menu*  Hmmm .... I shall have .... two Belgium waffles with strawberry topping, eggs sunny-side up, four slices of bacon ... oh the pancakes look good ... I'll have three of them ... two hash browns, and a cup of...

Madame: *nods while looking at menu* ... hot chocolate.

Willy: *smiles at Madame*  precisely  *puts down menu*

Blake *laughs*  And may that high metabolism never let you down!  *takes last look at menu*  I'll have Marijke's omelette of the day ...

Manouche:  French toast, fruit ...

Raven:  Blueberry pancakes.  *To Madame*  The mothers where I used to live ate lots of blueberries ... they said they're good for the babies. *smiles*

Manouche *looks up*  Madame, luv, I swear, I didn't tell him!  He jus' knows things sometimes.

Madame:  I'll have the belgium waffles with  *smiles*  Blueberries eh?... ok...blueberry topping ... *looks at Raven*  How’d you know I was pregnant?  *leans in, scrunches up nose*  Bet you don’t know what gender it is.  *sticks tongue out*

Raven *frowns, looks at Manouche, tugs on her sleeve.  She leans down, he whispers to her.*

Manouche:  Oh.  Gender.  That means, boy or girl.

Raven *looks back at Madame*  One'll be as pretty as you.  An' the other one'll be almost as pretty as him.  *Points at Willy.  Glances up at Blake, then looks back at Madame, quickly sticks his tongue out, grins*

Madame: *shocked, smiles*  Why thank you!  You’re a smart one, aren’t you?  I'm sure you’ll get along well with Chase and Will.

Willy: *cant help but smile at Raven, then notices the food arriving*  O yes...  *rubs hands together, digs in as soon as the plates are put in front of him.  Madame sighs at Willy, gives a wink to Raven, starts eating*

Blake: We have other news, too. *smiles, reaches arm around Raven, places hand on Manouche’s shoulder*  We’re moving into a house together.  Pam’s bought a property near Sleepy Hollow, an’ she wants us to take the guest house, help her take care of the place.  We saw it this morning …

Manouche *beams*  It's perfect.  An’ there’ll be a room jus’ fer lil’ mate ‘ere, anytime he wants it.  *Gives Raven a hug, looks over at Blake lovingly*

Raven:  It's a nice house.  *Looks at Blake, whispers something; Blake shrugs, nods, hands him a sprig of parsley from his omelette.  Raven takes parsley, tosses it onto one of Willy's many plates.*  That's for good luck.  *grins*

Madame: *smiles grandly*  Oh Manouche thats fantastic news!  Isn’t it dear?  *nudges Willy*

Willy: *stops eating, looks up, chewing food, gives thumbs up, then sees the parsley, looks up at Raven, arches brow*  Good luck?  *Blake, Manouche and Madame stop dead in their tracks, whole table goes silent*

Manouche *voice awestruck*  Blimey, Raven ... y' did th' impossible.  Ye got Willy t' say somethin' before all his food's gone!

Raven *looks as if it's no big deal, turns to Willy*  If you toss parsley onto a friend's plate, it'll bring them good luck.  *pauses*  You can eat it, too.  Good for the breath ... lot better'n chewin' gum.  *shrugs, goes back to eating.

Willy *picks it up, examines it, then looks at Raven, at the other three staring at him, shakes head*  And you people think I'M weird.  Look at all your faces!  *goes back to eating silently.  Madame arches brow, looks at Manouche, mouths "wow"*

Blake *shakes head, looks at Madame*  So ....... what have you two been up to lately?  Still a busy time for the business?

Madame: *nods*  It's always a busy time.  *Willy pauses in between chews, looks at Madame*  Oh yes, I know what you'd say there, 'Still seems like more bills than checks.'  *Willy winks, nods, smiles, then goes back to eating.  Madame shakes head.*  So anyway, we're still handling it well.  It’s nothing over the top, unlike holidays like Halloween.

Manouche *laughs, looks at Blake*  There, y'see, that's what I were on about when we were talkin' th' other night.  *Turns to Madame*  I were tellin' Mr. Blake about how it was at Christmas, when we were 'avin' dinner at th' factory.  How it was business as usual fer Willy, him jumpin' feet first into th' feedin' frenzy, as it were ... an' how th' pair o' ye managed to communicate without a word.  Blimey, it's like ye can read each other's minds sometimes.  'Course, I 'ave me experiences with that sorta thing, it's in me blood.  An' lil' mate 'ere, he's got it t' spare.  All but saved me life with it when we was prisoners.  *Hugs Raven gently, looks back at Madame*  But I've seldom seen it between two people such as yerselves.  *smiles, takes drink of coffee*

Madame:  Oh that would be something wouldnt it?  *laughs*  Hmm Willy?  *Willy looks up, smiles at Manouche, thinks about that, nods, goes back to eating but keeps on thinking.  Madame smiles at Raven.*  So ... how old are you lad?

Raven:  I'm ten.  My birthday's October 31.

Manouche:  Aye, yer a Halloween child, aren't ye, luv?  We'll have t' have a good party fer ye this year.  Fancy ... we'll have new twin babies by that time ... an' ye'll be able t' celebrate with yer mum.  *Hugs him again, he looks shy but smiles with genuine pleasure at the thought*

Madame: Ah yes, thats actually a little more than a week after our one year anniversary.  I'm sure you'll love the twins, Raven.

Willy: *stops thinking about what Manouche said, looks up, stops chewing*  So what have you done in the past to celebrate your birthday?

Raven *stops eating, face lights up*  We'd have a big bonfire, an' dancing, an' music, an' food an' games ... I got presents, too.  Everyone made a present for me.  When I was old enough, I made presents for True Dreamer an' my mother for my birthday.  My mother left me with True Dreamer 'cause she had a broken spirit.  I thought a present would make her feel better.  I asked True Dreamer once if mother got my presents.  She said she always did her best to send 'em along ... an' she said if one got lost along the way, it didn't matter, 'cause my mother would receive the thought, an' that's what mattered.  *Looks down, leans into Manouche, looks up, smiles at Willy*

Willy: *gives a warm smile*  Sounds like a lot of fun.  You'll have to be at a party at the factory.  Now THAT is a lot of fun  *finishes eating, pushes away plates*  So are there any other candies in particular that you don’t like?  What’re your favorites?  And why do YOU hate gum?  *Madame grins, amazed at the interaction going on*

Raven:  I like chocolate covered berries if they're fresh.  They're gross if they're old.  Gum is ... people look so funny when they chew it.  Like tobacco.  *grimaces; the others laugh at his expression.  He looks at Willy, brightens*  You have parties at the factory?  You have boats an' elevators, too, like rides ...

Blake *grins, ruffles his hair*  Now how did you know that?

Raven *shrugs*  I dunno.

Manouche *to Willy and Madame*  See, what'd I tell ye?

Willy: I hate gum. Disgusting stuff, but they always insist that I make it anyway.  *grins*  of course we have boats and elevators.  They go real fast!  You'll have to try them out.  And there are so many rooms.  All kinds of stuff.

Madame:  Its like a big toy store.  So much fun every day, Raven.  You'd love the factory.

Willy: *gives his beaming smile*  It's the best of my creations as of today.  My work is everything.  Only room left is for my wife, kids, and sister.  *smiles at Manouche*  Your face would light up in there.

Raven *smiles enthusiastically*  I can't wait to see it!  *Turns to Manouche*  You're right, he's a perfect brother for you ... good for when you miss your real brother.  *Takes her hand in both of his, concentrates*

Manouche *sees her brother in her head, blinks away tears*  Cheers, lil' mate, I don't know how y' do it, but y' always seem t' do jus' th' right thing.  *squeezes his hand*  Aye, Willy is every bit as much me brother as if he were born to it.  *smiles warmly at Willy*  So we'll 'ave to give Raven a tour of th' factory sometime soon, eh, Willy luv?

Willy:  Ah I'd INSIST on it as soon as possible.  Whenever you want my dear boy.  You'll love every moment of that fantabulous factory.  Simply splendid.  Scrumdiddlyumtious.  It’s ...

Madame: WILLY.  Breathe dear.  Calm down.  Don’t give too much away.

Willy: *smiles at Madame, then looks back at Raven*  Boy, do you know who your father is?

Raven *startled*  N-no.  No, I don't.

Manouche:  Seems a bit daft, don't it?  All th' other things he can see, but he hasn't clocked his own dad.  *catches Raven's eye, smiles reassuringly*  No worries, son, ye know yer mum, now.  Y' can talk to her about it.  Kat's a good'un, she won't lead ye on.

Willy:  Ah lad, I know how you feel on that one  *nods approvingly, pauses and looks at Raven intently*  You know who you look like?  *looks at Madame*

Madame: *arches brow at Willy, slowly turns head to look at Raven, mouth drops*  He looks like...

Madame and Willy together: ... Abberline  *in a low whisper*

Manouche *eyes wide*  Abberline!  *turns Raven toward her, examines his face carefully*  By th' powers ... never noticed, with th' Cherokee features ... but now that y' mention it, there's somethin' about th' eyes ... naah, it can't be!  *grins*

Raven: Who's Abb-- Abberline?

Manouche:  Well ... he's a bloke who lives right 'ere in Deppville, luv.  He's ...  *looks at Blake*

Blake:  He's ... he's an inspector.  Sort of a policeman ...

Manouche:  Aye, an' ... he's very brave, in his way.  An' ... *Remembers the night of almost certain seduction, eyes glaze over*  ... he's quite handsome ...

Blake:  AHEM!

Manouche *snaps out of it, jumps, spills the remaining sip of coffee in her cup*  Oh!  Apologies, love!  Well ... anyway ... what else can I tell ye about 'im.  Ah, yes, he has some tragedy in his past.  I don't know th' whole story, but ... well, somethin' happened that hurt him pretty deeply.  That's all y' really need t' know.  *smiles*  No need t' fret, best to wait an' ask Kat.  I imagine it's coincidence, I don't believe she knew Abberline back then.  It's enough fer ye t' know that Willy an' Madame are payin' ye a fine compliment when they say ye resemble him.  Savvy?  *Raven nods, squeezes Manouche's hand under table.  She squeezes it back, winks at him.*

Madame:  Well I think it's best time we be heading back home, we have much work to do today ... again.

Willy: *stands up, helps Madame, turns and smiles at Raven*  My boy, you be sure to come visit us at the factory, you'll enjoy it muchly.  Anytime.  We're almost always there.  *smiles, reaches out hand, smiles intently as they shake*

Madame: *grins still at the interaction, shakes Raven's hand, hugs Manouche*

Willy: *hugs Manouche, tips hat at Blake*  Lovely meal.  I miss those times.  We'll have to do it again.

Madame:  Surely.  *links arms with Willy as they walk back to the factory*

Manouche:  Cheers, mates!  It's been a lovely day, t' be sure!  We'll arrange that tour soon, Raven prob'ly won't stop askin' till we've set a date.  *smiles at Blake, the two of them each take one of Raven's hands, they leave Chez Roux and stroll back toward ship.*

Raven *looks up at Blake, then Manouche*  They're soulmates.  Like you two.

Blake *grins*  Yes, I guess you could say that.  *glances at Manouche*

Raven:  Mr. Wonka has somethin' on his mind.

Manouche:  What would that be, luv?

Raven:  Not sure.  I think ... I think it's a surprise for Mrs. Wonka.

Manouche *laughs*  Again?  He's surprisin' her with gifts all the time, nothin' new there.

Raven:  This is different.  *Smiles, looks up at Blake*  You forgot.

Blake:  What?  I --- oh!  *laughs*  I sure did.  Here, let's stop here a minute.  *They stop walking*

Manouche *looks out at the beach, the water, pretty sky*  Y'picked a good place t' stop, love, that's a beautiful view.  *looks at him*  What gives?

Blake *digs in pocket, pulls out Manouche's ring, the one he'd received from Nate in the terrible letter*  It's time you got this back.  *Takes her hand, places it on her finger, kisses her.*

Manouche *looks down at it, tears fill her eyes*  Ch-cheers, love.  *She gazes at him lovingly; he smiles, picks Raven up, carries him on his shoulders.  He puts his arm around Manouche, they start back for the ship.*

At the Wonkas’ factory:

Willy *opens factory door for Madame*  What was that boy's name again?

Madame: *walks in, takes off hat*  Raven ... cute little lad.  *Willy nods, helps Madame off with her coat, takes off his hat and coat, she wraps arms around his neck*  Your awfully quiet.

Willy *rubs Madame's arms, shrugs*  What would you think if we were to be sharing thoughts?

Madame:  Well I think it would be quite the connection.  Why do you ask?

Willy *shrugs again*  Just a passing thought ... come on, lets go get some work done.  *Takes Madame's hand, they walk together to their offices for the rest of the day*

At Deppville beach:

*Later, after brunch, Blake and Manouche sit on bench overlooking beach, watching Raven playing in the sand, as the sun starts to set.*

Manouche:  I’m glad y’ suggested this.  Chez Roux was delightful, an’ the weather’s so grand.  Too nice t’ go straight back to th’ ship.

Blake *arm around Manouche*  Would’ve been a shame to waste that sunset.

Manouche: An’ Raven’s ‘avin’ so much fun, jus’ look at ‘im.  Poor lil’ mate, he’s had more t’ bear than is right fer a boy his age.  I’m glad th' talk about who his dad is didn’t seem t’ bother him.

Blake *nods*  He’s had to grow up awfully fast, that’s the truth.  We’ll have to see if we can help him get some of his childhood back.  *squeezes her*

Manouche *smiles*  Aye, to be sure.  I reckon we can start by ….. OHH, blast!  *leans over, hands to head*

Blake *grabs her*  Honey, what is it?  *looks up, sees Raven running toward them*

Raven:  Manouche!

Manouche: C-c’mere, luv.  *straightens up, reaches out to him, he runs into her arms*  Y-yer seein’ somethin’ aren’t ye?  There, there, don’t be afraid, it’s like pictures, savvy?

Raven *trembling*  It- it’s somethin’ I saw yesterday.  I forgot about it till now, now it’s back.  The man I saw … I think it’s that Abberline.

Manouche:  S’alright, we’ll sort it out.  C’mon, share it with me.  *She shifts him around so they’re both sitting on the bench, facing each other, Blake sitting next to Manouche, holding her shoulders.*  Right, luv, gimme yer hands.

*Raven takes her hands, locks eyes with hers, concentrates.  Manouche braces for dizzy feeling, starts to tremble, closes eyes.  Murky, moss-green fog, clears only enough for her to make out shadowy figures, familiar, she can’t place them.  Tries to pierce fog, hears voices, tinny like an old-fashioned recording.  Trembles violently at sight of Nate, limping, but still very much alive and threatening … sees him strike someone, looks closer … *  Oh, god, Abberline … *Eyes fill with tears at the sound of Nate’s laugh, a sound she hoped she would never hear again, followed by the threat, though she’s unable to see who he’s speaking to:

"Find Kat, tell her if she doesn't surrender to me, this one is a dead man, and I think skinning him alive would be somewhat entertaining.  That should get her attention.

Manouche *cries out, falls back against Blake’s chest, Raven still clinging tight to her hands.*  Oh, god in heaven.  *Opens eyes, breathing heavily, feels Blake’s arms around her.  Raven gently releases her hands, leans over her anxiously.  She looks up at Blake, then nods at Raven*  Aye. Th- that were Abberline, lil’ mate.  Y-ye say y' had this come t' yer head yesterday?

Raven *trembling*  It wasn't that clear, an' then it was gone.  But it was Nate, an' he hit someone.

Manouche:  We- we’ve got t’ find Abberline.  P-per’aps this were jus’ a warnin’, o’ sorts.  *Slowly sits back up, looks hopefully into Raven’s eyes, but knows that neither of them are buying that explanation.*

Blake *holds her tight*  Give yourself a minute, honey, just catch your breath.  *Raven climbs into her lap, pulls up the bottom of his shirt, wipes her face gently; she wraps her arms around him.  He looks up at Blake, who nods, smiles approvingly*

Manouche:  Right, I’m ready.  Let’s get back to th’ ship, first an’ foremost, I need t’ see Kat an’ Refugee.  *She rises a little unsteadily, Blake holds her on one side, Raven takes her other hand, they hurry back to the ship.

On The Libertine Trailer:

They start looking for Kat, don’t see her in the room she and Raven are sharing.*  B-blimey, where d’ ye think she is?

Blake:  Take it easy, she prob’ly isn’t far.  She might even be somewhere else on the ship, let’s look for her.  *Manouche nods, they return to the main deck to search, calling her name.*

Kidd *furious, hearing Manouche's voice, steps through door*  Bloody 'ell,  Manouche!  Ye shoulda 'eard that blasted fool Ichy!  *Kidd speaking in a high squeaky voice*  “There be no shape shifter!  There ne'er were a shape shifter ... and there will ne'er be a shape shifter.”  ‘Es simply a child.  Jeez!!!!  *stops short seeing Raven, studies him*  Yer a bit on the small side to be causin' such a bother, aren't ye boy.

Manouche:  Blimey, KIDD!  What brings ye 'ere, mate?  *crouches down, hugs Raven*  He's no bother, don't say that.  Have ... have y' seen Abberline?  We 'ave reason t' believe he's in danger ...

At the docks:

Colonel:  Ichabod?  What are you doing here?  Kat’ll skin me alive; worse, she’ll try to hit me over the head with her shovel.

Ichabod:  Don’t worry about her, besides, you’re grand at dodging that ol’ thing.

Colonel *blushes, snaps out of it*  No, she’ll still try … But again, what are you doing here?

Ichabod *whispers*  Abberline …The stubborn mule ran off and I believe he’s in trouble.  I was hoping you could help find him?

Colonel: I’m sure Manouche would be able to help.  *Ichabod mouth open, finger up, about to protest.  Before he can, Colonel runs off to find Manouche.  Boards The Apparition, stops*

On The Apparition:

*A shadowy figure appears on The Apparition, right in front of the Colonel*  You must stop this, it says in a low voice with a very strange accent.  You must recover the lost soul box. It has captured the souls of both necromancers and white wizards, the knowledge of our old shamans ... the one who has it can rule the world ...

*Three more figures appear on the deck*  The soul box! You must not let anyone use it!  We have guarded it in our sanctuary in Fiji for centuries. We have followed the box. It is here.  You must get back the soul box! It is dangerous in wrong hands!  Four pairs of eyes are looking imploringly at Colonel.

Colonel *stutters*  W-Who are you?  W-What are you?  Why are you here?  W .. *gulps* ... What do you want with me?  What do I do?

The leader casts away his cloak.  He is a small dark skinned man with a leathery face and small black piercing eyes.  We are the Guardians of the Circle.  We guard the Sanctuary, he repeats.  We must get back the soul box.

Dean Corso *appears, he's out of breath and looks scared*  Abberline!  That nasty man clubbed him down and threatens to kill him if he doesn't get Kat!

Colonel *to Dean*  I think I know who has him ... I ... I'm afraid I know.

On The Libertine Trailer:

Kidd:  'Ad te come.  Ichy were givin' Kat grief o'er ... *hesitates, frowns looks at Raven, frowns again*  I 'ad te be dealin' with 'em for 'er, that's all.  Abberline??  Now what kind a trouble would 'e be in to?

Manouche:  Kidd, it’s NATE. He’s back again, we think … well, we think he’s kidnapped Abberline.  *Indicates Raven*  Lil’ mate ‘ere, he had a vision, an’ his visions aren’t to be ignored, savvy?  *arches brow at Kidd, eyes her carefully*  But then, I don't need t' be tellin' ye that, do I?  Anyway, Nate were tellin’ someone t’ inform Kat that he'd be killin' Abberline unless she gives ‘erself up to ‘im.  Kidd, what’ll we do?  We don’t even know where th’ bloody ‘ell they are.  *small grin*  I 'ave t' tell ye, mate ... though it ain't in keepin' with th' situation ... that were a bloody good imitation o' Ichy!

Kidd:  'ow the blazes did Abberline let that blighter get the drop 'em!  Ne'er knew 'em te be slow witted.  Nate ... I been wantin' te get some quality alone time with that snake e'er since I 'eard 'e was about ... Nate's wantin' Kat te find 'em, right? Well he'd be where ye left 'em I'm thinkin', eh?

Corso *running agitated and screaming*  You have to do something, there's that mean guy in the woods and he clubbed down Abberline.

Manouche:  Corso??  *watches from deck of Libertine Trailer*  Blimey, he's runnin' fer Th' Apparition.  What th' blazes is goin' on?  *turns to Kidd*  Ye reckon they're in th' woods?  We can't jus' go waltzin' in on 'em, it's Nate we're talkin' about.

Raven:  But he's not with Marchand anymore.

Manouche *looks at him*  Y -- what?  Are ye sure?  But ... then what's he want with Kat??  *looks at Kidd questioningly*

Kidd:  'E wants te be finishin' what 'e started. As 'e would say save 'er soul by burnin' 'er sins away and 'ed be meanin' literally burnin'.  What the 'ell ye think 'ed be wantin'?  Te kiss and make up!!!!!!  BLAST!!!

Manouche *covers Raven's ears*  Oh, bloody 'ell, Kidd!  Wh-what can we do?  I don't want Raven 'ere to 'ave to face all this.  He seen what happened t' True Dreamer ... this is too much, it ain't fair.  What'll we do, mate?

Blake:  If I get another chance ... I'll kill him this time.  He won't walk away again.

Kidd *almost whispers*  True Dreamer ..... BLOODY BASTARD!!!!  'ave Blake get the boy te the safety of Pam's and meet us at the woods.  We'll be needin' Refugee.

Manouche *tears in her eyes, scoops up Raven, kisses him, gives him to Blake*  Stay safe, lil' mate, we'll be back fer ye soon.  *Looks at Blake, they gaze into each other's eyes for a moment, she throws her arms around him and kisses him, whispers*  Hurry, love.  *Blake takes Raven ashore, runs in direction of Pam's.*

Corso *stops when he sees the hooded Fijians on the Apparition, pales, turns and runs to the Libertine Trailer, bumps right into Manouche and tries to hide himself behind her back*  You got to help me, hide me, please, don't let them catch me!

Kidd *reaches out grabs Corso*  Bloody 'ell get outa the way.  *pushing him off the edge of the dock into the water.*  Bon voyage ....

Manouche *running on deck, looks overboard, into water, frowns*  Hmmm.  Well, I s'pose that's as good a hidin' place as any, Corso.  *shakes head*  Blimey, strange sort, him.  *runs*

On The Apparition:

Colonel *yells*  WAIT!! CORSO!! DON'T LEAVE ME HERE WITH THESE...*looks at the multiple eyes*..THESE THINGS!  *feels hands upon her shoulders...taking her in*  THAT'S MY BAD SHOULDER!!!!!  OWWW!!!!!  HELP!!!!!  LET GO OF ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  *struggles and hopes she's heard*  CAN ANYONE HERE ME!!!!  MANOUCHE!!!!!!!!!  HANSON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ANYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  *starts to cry*

*A disembodied voice from out of the darkness says*  Use the force Colonel.......

Colonel:  Use the force to kick your ass ... I don't know how to use the force ... *feels sick and faint* ... What are you ... *feels pulled around to face the voice* ... Wh---*bleh...Colonel pukes on whoever it is* ... Hell of a force, eh?  *holds stomach...feels dizzy* ... *tries to fight feeling*

A word from your host:  Well, the best-laid plans!  It were a wild n’ wooly night o’ crazy posts, LOL!  Let’s now return to the regularly-schedule program, and see if we can try that rescue attempt a second time …

At Pam’s house:

Blake *enters room Pam has set up for Raven, sees him sitting on floor looking through one of Pam’s books about horses.  Comes over, sits on floor next to him*  Everything okay, son?

Raven *looks up*  You’re worried.  About Manouche an’ Mother …

Blake:  Yeah, I am.  That’s why I need you to do somethin’ for me.  I need you to stay here, mind what Aunt Pammie says, an’ wait for us to get back.

Raven:  I should go with you.  You only saw Nate once, behind bars …

Blake *looks at him sharply*  H-how d’you know about that?

Raven:  I could help you.  I’m of age now.

Blake:  What do you mean, of age?

Raven:  Back at my home, I would’ve had my first hunt by now.

Blake:  This ain’t quite the same as a hunt, lil’ one.  Besides, you’ve proven your bravery ten times more’n just about anyone I know.  *Puts hands on boy’s shoulders, turns him to face him*  I don’t doubt for a second that you’d be a great help, an’ I know you’re not scared.  But … your mother … y’know how teams work, right?  Well, you’ve been fightin’ Nate for awhile, so now your mother reckons it’s her turn.  An’ Manouche, you saved her life, so she feels it’s her turn, too.  An’ me … well …

Raven:  Manouche.

Blake: Right.  *pauses, looks at Raven, sees disappointment in his face*  Tell y’ what … when this is all over, an’ the time is right … if you’d like me to … I’d be honored to take you on your first hunt.  But for now, will you stay here?  *Raven nods solemnly*  Good, that’s a big help.  *Holds out hand, Raven shakes hands with him, he stands up*  We’ll be back as quick as we can.  True Dreamer’s awfully proud of you, son.  *Smiles at him from doorway as he reaches in pocket, as if looking for something*

Raven:  Y’don’t have enough with you.  You’ll need more ammunition.

Blake *stares at him for a moment, smiles slightly, leaves room, closing door behind him.*

Raven *listens to Blake and Pam talking, then hears Blake leave.  Hops into bed under covers, turns off light.  Hears Pam approaching, pretends to be asleep when she opens door and looks in on him.  Waits till door is closed and her footsteps fade down hall.  Jumps out of bed, walks over to window.  Concentrates on vision that came to him earlier and is still in his head … Nate and a man he doesn’t know but believes is Abberline, remembering what he heard about him from Manouche and Blake when they were at brunch with Willy and Madame.  He can’t make out words but winces at tones, and expression on Nate’s face, knows Abberline is in great danger.  Brings hands up to his eyes as if to stop the vision; brings them back down, looks up at the moon, takes a deep breath.  Shimmers and shifts into white raven, flies out window toward clearing in woods where Nate holds Abberline captive.*

In the woods:

Raven *in white raven shape, perches in tree high above clearing, observes Nate and Abberline.  Nate standing, holding a gun on Abberline, who’s on the ground, hands tied in front of him*

Nate:  Abberline, old man, I’m beginning to think I made an erroneous judgment regarding your importance to Kat.  I was sure she would have surrendered herself by now to see to your safety.  Possibly she thinks I was bluffing.  *looks at his watch*  But it’s getting late, no sign of her.  I suppose it’s time I sent a little something her way to express my intentions, such as they are.  *reaches into pocket, pulls out large knife, gazes at it thoughtfully*

Raven *blinks as images fill his mind’s eye, along with jumble of voices … Kat most prominent, but also visions of her with Abberline, pictures flashing so quickly he’s unable to grasp one at a time … some of them seeming at odds with each other, but others where they’re smiling, carefree.  He then sees images of Nate and those he’s harmed – True Dreamer, Kat, Manouche … Abberline … a roaring fills his head, and a single word dominates, which does and doesn’t surprise him, and he wonders if he’s saying it out loud:  FATHER … *

*Filled with rage, he swoops down from tree.  As he lands on the ground, he shimmers and shifts into fierce white wolf.  Pauses only for a moment, then pads quietly toward clearing.  He sees Nate, feels his lips pull back in a snarl, showing large white teeth, races swiftly into clearing and leaps upon Nate full-force, going for the neck.  Nate screams as he’s knocked to the ground, gun and knife both falling from his hands.  Abberline jumps up, grabs gun, stands shakily, pointing gun at Nate as he struggles with the wolf. Raven sees Abberline with the gun, feels some of the rage leave him, releases Nate, who lies on the ground bleeding, breathing heavily.  Raven backs up a few steps, walks in a sort of circle, shimmers and changes back to himself.  He looks at his hands for a moment; the wolf-shape is brand-new to him, and he’s left somewhat dazed.  He then looks up at Abberline, and his eyes brighten, he starts to smile.  He hears the word again in his head, finds himself wanting to say it … then stops, and freezes as he sees Abberline’s shocked expression.  Voices and images from long ago fill his head – memories of narrow-minded towns that he and True Dreamer had had to deal with at times … people who were afraid of him because he was different, people who made fun of him.  Now Abberline had seen what he is, and there is no taking it back.  The smile fades, the word dies in his throat, now tight with tears, and he turns and runs blindly from the clearing … leaving Abberline in stunned silence, still carefully holding the gun on Nate, who’s been rendered harmless for the time being from the wolf attack.*

*Raven runs through woods as fast as he can, dropping all Indian training of moving silently – as if stomping his feet will put more distance between himself and the revulsion he’s sure he saw in Abberline’s face.  So intent on this goal, he has no idea how he’s suddenly in the arms of Kidd and Manouche, coming from the opposite direction with Refugee, on their way to rescue Abberline.  With a sensation much like coming up for air after swimming underwater, he realizes where he is; and his tears burst forth as he clings to them both, sobbing.*

Manouche:  Raven!  Oh, lil’ one, what is it, what’re ye doin’ ‘ere?  *kneels down, tries to calm him*  There, there, easy, mate.  Why’re ye out ‘ere, where’s Mr. Blake?

Raven:  I – I wasn’t afraid …  I- I w-wanted t’ help.  I saw him … he was in danger, N-Nate wasn’t gonna wait any longer … he had a knife, I had to do s-something … I saw it all in my head …

Manouche:  Who, luv, who’d ye see?

Raven:  Th’ one you tol’ me about, Abber- Abber –

Manouche *glances up at Kidd*  Abberline?  *looks back at Raven*  Now slow down, lil’ mate, tell us what ‘appened.

Raven:  I- I snuck out after Blake left.  I was a white raven, way up in th’ tree.  *points small hand up at treetops back at the clearing*  I – I saw Nate, he ... he didn’t know why K-Kat hadn’t come yet … so h-he got out his knife …  *looks at Manouche, unable to speak.  He takes her hands in his, concentrates*

Manouche *concentrates along with him, sees images of everything that took place*  Oh, blimey … bloody ‘ell!  *falls back, face pale.  Recovers somewhat, sits back up, stares at Raven*  Y-you mean t’ say … ye turned into a wolf??  An’ ye attacked Nate?

Raven *nods*  A-Abberline got th’ gun.  H-he’s guardin’ Nate.  Nate’s hurt, he can’t do any harm now.

Manouche *smiles, hugs him*  Well, then, yer a hero, luv!  Y’saved Abberline’s life.  There, there, me brave lad, no worries.  Why th’ tears?

Raven *sobs*  He- he saw me.  Abberline.  He saw me change.  I – I wanted t’ go to him.  Manouche, is he ...? ... I thought .... I thought he- he might be … he might be my …….  Then I saw th’ way he was lookin’ at me.  L-like the people who … who used t’ laugh at T-True Dreamer an’ me.  He-he’s afraid of me, h-he hates me …

Manouche *hugs him again*  Ahhh, no, mate, he don’t hate ye.  He couldn’t possibly.  He – he were jus’ surprised, is all, savvy?  *holds Raven back, takes end of scarf around her neck, gently wipes his face, smiles at him*  C’mon, luv.  Take me t’ where he’s holdin’ Nate, ye’ll see.  Abberline may be on th’ opposin’ side t’ us pirates, generally speakin’, but he ain’t a bad sort.  *Stands up, takes Raven’s hand in hers, starts back in direction he came from*

Kidd:  Avast!  Abberline be on his own now. 'es seen far too much already.  I'll not be addin' fuel te the fire.  *stares sadly at Raven*  Everythin's changed now, boy, and there be no goin' back.  Not now, not ever.  Best understand that.  *turns back the way they came.*

Manouche *stares after her*  Kidd!  Blimey, what’s changed, mate?  Fuel to th’ fire, what’re ye on about? … *Looks toward clearing, then down at Raven … still holding his hand, she shakes her head, reluctantly follows Kidd back to town.

On The Libertine Trailer:

*They run into Blake, who has stopped off for ammunition before setting out to catch up to them.*

Blake *surprised*  Why … what’re you doin’ here?  *looks at Raven*  What’s he –

Manouche:  Long story, love.  It’s all sorted, Abberline has Nate under control, as it were.  *looks at Kidd, then back at Blake*  Would ye be willin’ to head out t’ th’ woods, per’aps give him a hand?  Could be he’s already brought Nate back t’ town, but if he ain’t, well, he’d no doubt welcome yer assist.

Blake *looks at the three of them carefully, then shrugs*  If you’re sure.  *Manouche nods.  He kisses her, ruffles Raven’s hair affectionately, touches brim of hat toward Kidd, steps past them and leaves the ship, heading toward the woods.*

Manouche *watches him go, then turns to Kidd*  Right, mate, out with it.  What’s this all about?  Why’re ye so keen on keepin’ lil’ brave ‘ere away from Abberline?

Kidd:  You don't understand, mate.  You can't. It be outta our 'ands now.  Just leave it be.  *turns to Raven*  What ye did was wrong boy and there be a price te pay.  *addressing Manouche*  The boy stays 'ere for now.  Don't let 'em outta ye sight.  I be badly in need of fresh air.  *looks at Raven, frowns*  I be leavin' Refugee te see that ye stay put.  I be most certain Kat will be returnin' soon.  *steps through door and departs ship.*

Manouche *eyes wide, fear growing inside*  Kidd, please, mate, tell me.  Yer scarin’ me.  Lil’ Raven didn’t mean t’ do wrong, he were jus’ tryin’ to help.  Kidd, don’t go –   *Starts to follow, is stopped by Refugee, growling menacingly, barring doorway.  Stunned beyond words, she steps back into room, sinks down on the floor, takes Raven in her arms*  E-easy, lil’ mate, we’ll get it sorted.  *She looks at him, he stares deeply at her with his large, dark eyes.  She blinks back tears, holds him close, waits for Kat*

Kat *enters room, notices Refugee laying by the door, braces herself, glances at Raven then looks toward Manouche*  I'm sorry, Manouche, this has not worked out as I'd hoped.  He's revealed himself to an outsider.  There can be no peace or happiness for him here.  Raven has to go.  There's no other way.

Blake *boards ship, enters*  I tried to find Abberline, no luck.  I guess he must’ve already brought Nate back into town …  *voice trails off, he looks at Kat, then Manouche*  What’s goin’ on?

Manouche *stands up, hands on Raven’s shoulders*  Ahh, Kat, y’can’t be serious.  T-take lil’ Raven away?  *tries to joke*  Blimey, luv, this is Deppville.  We’re knee-deep in misfits, in case ye hadn’t noticed!  *smile fades at Kat’s serious expression.  Takes deep breath, silently prays for her gift of silver tongue to work, starts talking for all she’s worth.*  Kat, no.  P-please don’t do this, mate.  Lil’ Raven, he were desp’rate, he were tryin’ t’ save someone from Nate.  He seen what Nate done t’ True Dreamer.  D’ ye really think he could stan’ by an’ not do anything in his power t’ stop Nate from ‘armin’ someone else?  *feels herself getting panicky, tries yet another tack*  An’ remember, we’re talkin’ about Abberline, ‘ere.  Of all people fer Raven t’ reveal himself to, th’ Inspector’s one o’ the better choices.  He’s on th’ side o’ the law, I’ll grant, but he also has a certain understandin’ fer the unexplained, savvy?  All them visions an’ such.  He’s likely t’ keep Raven’s activity to himself fer one o’ two reasons … either he’d be afraid t’ take such a story to Portsmith fer fear o’ bein’ laughed at … or a part of him believes in what he saw.  Or both!  *sees that Kat’s not convinced, turns to Blake imploringly*

Blake:  Kat, this isn’t necessary.  He’ll be fine right here.  He … he wants to be close to you, an’ … well, he’ll always have a home with us.

Raven *looks up at Kat, very solemn, trembling slightly, but no tears*  I-I’m very sorry, Mother.  I’ll never do it again, please let me stay.  *Manouche squeezes his shoulders comfortingly*

Kat: *turns to the boy, speaking quickly, determined not to lose her resolve*  I've made arrangements for your future.  I've contacted old friends of the family, they knew my mother well, including what she was.  So they know what to expect with you.  They've agreed to raise you as one of their own.  They're good people, in time you'll see that for yourself.  I intend to take you to them.  I suggest you say your good-byes to Manouche and Blake now.  We sail with the tide.  *sees the look in Raven's eyes, wavers momentarily but stands firm.*  It's for the best, you'll understand that someday.  *takes a step towards him, suddenly Refugee leaps in front of her blocking her from the boy, snarling and growling.  Startled, Kat backs away, staring at Refugee*  What is this?  What's gotten into you?  *the air around Refugee shimmers and suddenly changes into a Cherokee brave staring steadily into Kat's eyes.  Astonished, Kat stammers*  Brother?  Gili?  I never thought to see your true form again.

Gili:  For the boy alone, I am here.  Have you forgotten the ways of our people.  As his closest male relative, I claim blood right in deciding his future.  In this, you've no right to interfere.  Your right is the duty of a mother to care for her son.  Though there will be those who will fear him and not understand, he must learn there is no shame in what he is.  He must stand tall and proud and not hide in fear.  Even you have not walked this path and cannot understand.  I will not let you make a coward of him.

Kat *puzzled and uncertain*  Gili, ye make no sense.  Have ye not yourself hidden away in the form of a dog for more years than I can count.  How can ye then be sayin' that this be wrong?

Gili:  You know inside yourself that it's wrong.  Fear is a poor companion to live your life with.  There's truth in your words, I did travel that road.  There was no one to tell me it was the wrong one.  *Gili's gaze shifts to Raven.*  This one will have the wisdom of my mistakes.  He'll have the life that I once dreamed of.  I'll leave you now to consider my words but don't think to try to take Raven away from Deppville.  I'll not allow it.  *turns confidently to leave the room.*

Kat *reaches out and takes his arm; he looks at her.  Tearfully she replies*  Brother ye can still 'ave that life.

*Gili takes her by the shoulders and says*  I know, it's here with the boy.  *he smiles, studies her*  Kidd's very close now, isn't she?

Kat *eyes widening*  'owed do ye know??

Gili:  I have no visions, as does Raven, but I can always tell.  It's in your eyes and the way you speak.  Stay your fears sister, no harm will come to Raven.  I'll not allow that either.  *smiles once more, leaves room.*

Manouche *watches him go, then stares at Kat*  Blimey, mate, I remember ye tellin’ me about Gili a long time ago.  Never figured I’d see him as he really is.  Handsome bloke, ain’t he?  Reckon I’ll think twice next time I rub Refugee’s belly!

Raven *starts to say something, then rushes to Kat and happily throws his arms around her*

Kat *drops to her knees holds him close*  Ye did no wrong luv.  Seems I were the one in the wrong.  I didna want to lose you but I feared what might come.  Do ye forgive me luv?  I only were wantin' for your 'appiness.

Blake *puts his arm around Manouche, smiles*  I think he forgives you, Kat.

At the Security Office:

*Abberline and Godley step out from the Office.*

Godley:  Look, you shouldn't do that, with all due respect, some things are just best left as they are.

Abberline:  No, I’ve got to go the end.  I’ve got to know!

Godley sighs:  As always.  You already got yourself almost killed because you never can give up on anything.  It was just one more unexplained vision.

Abberline:  No, I saw the wolf change into a boy.  It was not a vision.

Godley:  You got hit in the head.

Abberline:  I could hear his thoughts, he was shouting something ...

Godley:  I hear that he is Kat's boy, so there is no mystery about that matter.  So what did you hear, Inspector?

Abberline *stares at the cobblestones at his feet, then raises his eyes and looks at Godley without saying anything.  Godley sighs once more; he knows this stubborn expression too well from the past.  Abberline pushes past Godley an starts to walk away.*

Godley:  Look, at least let me come with you to see them.  *mumbles to himself*  Anyone else would have had enough of shovels ... Not him.

At the docks:

Godley *grabs Abberline's arm and stops him.*  How do you know she's there?  And even if she were, the pirates ain't going to let you on board, because you are from Security!  And Kat doesn't want anything to do with you.

Abberline *shakes Godley away so violently that he staggers*  Well, I can't know if she's there unless I try, can I?

Godley:  Inspector, listen to me!  Why can't you even once listen to someone else other than those inner voices of yours!  If this goes on, you are soon going to resemble that psychic Dimitri.  Those visions are a curse!

Abberline:  He has visions, too.  I felt it.  I saw it.  *They look at the pirate boats in harbor.  Everything seems quiet and peaceful. *

Godley:  Do you want to endanger them too?  I know that you don't care for your own security, but, Inspector, you should know that I am not the only one following you.  She keeps an eye on you because she does not trust you anymore.  You should definitely keep a distance until there are no spying eyes reporting to her.

Abberline *hesitates, lights a cig.  He knows that Godley is right.*

On The Libertine Trailer …

Blake:  How ‘bout we all go to the new house?  There’s plenty of room there, I know we just moved in, but … *smiles at Manouche*  I’ve been kinda lookin’ forward to our first night there.

Manouche:  Aye, that’s a fine idea, to be sure.  *turns to Kat*  Kat, you an’ Raven’ll come with us, I won’t take no fer an answer, mate.  His room’s th’ one room that’s set up best … I, ah, took th’ liberty of doin’ that’un up straight away.  Y’see, I been countin’ on him bein’ around, luv.  *shrugs, smiles*  Besides, look at ‘im, he’s sound asleep.  We should be gettin’ him into a proper bed, poor lil’ mate, he’s all in.

Kat:  Yer right.  He be resting easier in a comfortable bed.

*Blake, Manouche, Kat and Raven leave the ship, Blake carrying the sleeping Raven, and Refugee – having returned to dog form – following along.  As they reach the dock, Manouche hears Refugee whining, agitated.  Looks up and sees Abberline walking away from the docks.*

Manouche:  Blimey, it’s Abberline!

Blake:  Good, we can make sure he got Nate back under lock an’ key.

Manouche:  Chances are good, luv, I don’t think he’d be walkin’ about ‘round ‘ere otherwise.  *raises voice *  Inspector!  Over ‘ere, mate!

Kat:  No, don't!  I don't want 'em near Raven!

Abberline *stops and turns around.*  Manouche!

*In the same moment, a shadowy figure glides from the alley nearby.*

Corso:  Good evening, Inspector!  Having a chat with the pirates?  This port is not a safe place at all to be late in the evening.  They say that the shadows are still waiting ... And if you don't get trapped by them, the pirates might throw you to the sharks.  Someone might not like you dealing with pirates unofficially, or to say, almost amicably.  Someone might get upset.  Maybe you should listen more carefully to your loyal watchdog, he seems to be wiser than you.  But, as I see, you are here not merely taking a walk, but seeing someone.  Perhaps you even have meeting, or is that a date?  I don't want to detain you ...

Abberline *turns his back to the pirate ship with an effort.*

Godley *gives Abberline a warning glance*  It seems that you aren't so well informed after all, Mister Corso.  Inspector, we have done here all we can, there are no Fijian shadows here, but Fortune is smiling upon us.  I believe Mister Corso can enlighten us upon this Fijian business, being one who has made contact with the shadows.  Back to the office, gentlemen!

Manouche *starts toward them*  Hold up, mates.  Corso, this ain't yer affair, savvy?  *bristles*  Anyway, ye weren't thrown t' sharks, an' ye bloody well know it.  They was dolphins!  Or goldfish, per'aps ...

Blake:  C'mon, Godley, we jus' want a word with the Inspector, that's all.

Refugee *starts whining, bars Manouche or Blake from following after Abberline and the others.*

Manouche *calls out*  Abberline!  Why don'tcha talk to us, mate?  Godley, what th' bloody 'ell's goin' on?

Kat:  Let the blighter go.  Don't ye be understandin' 'e saw what Raven is.  *glares after them*

Manouche:  Ah, but Kat, did ye see th' look on 'is face?  I think he wanted t' talk to us.  M-maybe we should go after 'em.

Raven *stirs in Blake's arms, opens his eyes.  Turns head, sees figures walking away, speaks sleepily to Blake*  Is that ... is that Abberline?  Is he ...

*Refugee whines*

Kat:  Give Raven te me.  Follow them if ye will.  I want nothin' te do with 'em.

Manouche *stares after them, sighs*  No, per'aps we best not.  Didn't like th' look Godley gave us.  An' Corso, he'd find any reason he could to 'ave us arrested, an' that's no good fer lil' mate 'ere.  *looks fondly at Raven, who's fallen back to sleep in Blake's arms*  C'mon, let's stick to th' path we chartered ... let's get him into a proper bed, let 'im get some rest.  *They turn away from the direction toward the offices, and head for the house.*

At Manouche and Blake’s house:

Manouche *walks around house, checking on everyone.  The rest are sound asleep.  She peeks in Raven’s room, smiles at the sight of him asleep in Kat’s arms.  Moves down hall, looks in the master bedroom at Blake, who’s fallen asleep while reading.  She picks up magazine he dropped, sets it on table next to bed, Blake stirs a bit, turns over and goes back to sleep.*  Sweet dreams, love.  I don’t s’pose ye’d approve o’ what I’m goin’ to do, but I ‘ave t’ try an’ find out what Corso an’ Godley are up to, an’ why Abberline don’t seem quite th’ willin’ party to it all.  Per’aps I’m imaginin’ things, but he looked like he wanted t’ talk to us.  An’ th’ way he said me name … never sounded like that comin’ from ‘im before.  Usually sounds like he thinks I’m nothin’ but lowlife.  An’ all that gab about Fiji.  Bloody ‘ell, it’d serve ‘em well t’ be askin’ me about Fiji, an’ Abberline knows that fer a fact.  There was a time they’d be draggin’ me in fer questionin’.  S’all very mysterious.  *shrugs*  Anyway, reckon I’ll see what I can find out.  What could go wrong?  No law against a citizen approachin’ th’ offices of th’ local law, now, is there?  *leans over, kisses Blake gently, tiptoes out of room, closes door.  Moves through house to front door, reaches for doorknob … and Refugee springs up between her and the door.*  Blimey!  Refugee, ye scared the ‘ell outta me!  *She tries to look stern but has to laugh as the dog pulls his lips back in an affable grin.  She leans down, pets him, rubs his ears*  Yer comin’ with me, ain’t ye?  Right, well, I won’t fight ye on that.  Matter o’ fact, I’d appreciate yer company.  *Refugee wags tail, nuzzles her.  She starts to hug his head to her breast, as she always has … then remembers that she’s now seen him as he really is, as Kat’s brother Gili, and she blushes a bit.*  Ahhh, right!  *pats his head reverently*  C’mon, then, mate, let’s ‘ave at it, if we’re goin’.

At Security Office building:

*She and Refugee enter the building, she listens at doors, finally hears voices coming from one.  Whispers to Refugee*  I think that’s Godley’s office.  C’mon, let’s see if we can hear anythin’.  *Moves closer, stands to side of the door, crouches down, listens, trying to make out what they’re saying.*

At Godley’s office:

*Abberline is pacing to and fro, smoking, barely listening to Godley, who is trying to convince him to forget the wolf, and let the past be as it is.  He knows that Godley is just trying to protect him from harm as so many more times before, and, as always, he is not paying any heed to Godley.  He is thinking of the wolf.  And the boy.  The wolf-boy, who has visions and who is Kat's son.  Who saved his life.  He's angry with himself for being a fool.

Abberline *interrupts Godley mid-sentence*  Godley.  He's mine.  And I have to get into contact with him.

Godley *groans*  How can it be possible?  How can you be sure?  And even if it were so, Inspector, Kat obviously doesn't want to have anything to do with you.  If this child is really yours, he may not want to see someone who abandoned him.

Abberline:  I did not know.  *He has been so very successful in suppressing all his memories from the past that he has completely forgotten about Kat, who had never meant much to him.*

Godley:  Leave it be, then.  We got work with Nate and the Fiji connection.

Abberline:  Manouche.  Manouche is the only way.

Godley:  No, you can't approach the pirates!  Manouche sees you just as a representative of Deppville Security.  She won't help you.  Commander is still displeased with you disobeying orders and almost getting yourself killed.  It will be the end of your career if she catches you socializing with the pirates.

Abberline:  I am past that.

Godley:  This stuff you have been poisoning yourself with has finally taken its toll on you.  You can't do ...

Abberline *interrupting him*  Arrest her.

Godley:  What?

Abberline:  Arrest Manouche.  Bring her into my office.

Godley:  But there are no charges against her.

Abberline:  Let's say I want to interrogate her on the disappearance of Commander's precious watch.

Manouche *listening outside the door, eyes wide, puts hand over mouth to keep from saying something.  Looks at Refugee, who's sitting next to her, whispers*  B-blimey, he's Raven's dad.  C-c'mon, luv, we best make ourselves scarce.  *Steps away from door, moves down hall to the building's entrance.  They leave the building, walk down steps to the street, Manouche stops.  Refugee whines slightly, she sighs*  I can’t do it, mate, I can’t leave.  Did’ye hear how he sounded?  I – I know Kat wants nothin’ to do with him, an’ I’m sure she ‘as her reasons.  But … blimey, he’s Raven’s dad.  This must be killin’ him.  An' he seems t' think I can be of some assist.  *looks at Refugee*  You trust ‘im, don’t ye?  You have all along.  *Refugee whimpers, wags tail.  She motions for him to follow her, returns to building, sits on steps, pulls out paper and pen, writes quick note.*  ‘Ere’s a note fer Mr. Blake.  I want ye to return to th’ house, take this with ye, in case I’m not back by th’ time everyone’s wakin’ up.  It’ll explain where I am.  If ye need to explain further … well, per’aps that’ll be a job fer Gili.  Savvy?  *winks, Refugee licks her face, she laughs.  Unties a scarf from around her neck, wraps note in it, ties it around Refugee’s neck*  Right, off ya go.  *Dog turns and trots back toward house.  She stands, looks at building, shakes head*  Malachi’d sure ‘ave a laugh at me now.  Feelin’ sympathy fer th’ law!  Ahhh, but he don’t know Raven.  *Squares shoulders, enters building, walks quietly back to Godley’s office.  Starts to knock; hesitates, not sure whether to reveal herself.*

*Godley opens the door and freezes when he sees Manouche.*  This is most unfortunate, Manouche.  I have been given orders to take you in for questioning.  Inspector Abberline believes you may have some knowledge about the whereabouts of Commander's precious watch.  But I am not going to do it.  What the hell have you been doing!  You are just trying to use him for some vile pirate scheme, feeding him lies about that boy, trying to hurt him, targeting where he is most vulnerable.  You know very well what happened to him and his wife.  You will return to your ship immediately, and if I see you lurking around once more, I will get you arrested.  In the dungeons with the devils.

Manouche *startled*  Godley, ye got me wrong, mate.  I'm 'ere to offer me services, if needed.  I got no scheme, I swear, by th' powers.  It's ... it's th' boy, it's Raven.  I happen t' know he saved th' Inspector's life.  I also ... well, I 'ave reason t' believe th' boy is Abberline's son.  Godley, I'd do anythin' fer that lil' bloke, I wouldn't use him fer any scheme.  He wants t' know his dad.  He ... he wants t' know his dad don't hate him, savvy?  Now I know ye've never had reason t' trust me ... but this is a special case, innit?  We both 'ave a vested interest, as it were.  Don't send me away.  *shrugs*  Beyond that ... well, we was all wonderin' whether Nate's under lock an' key.  Y' can at least tell me that, can't ye?  Last but not least ... I heard ye talkin' with Corso about Fiji.  It may interest ye t' know I'm rather well-versed in matters concernin' that very locale.  Oh aye, I've had me finger on th' pulse, y' might say, fer many years now.  So think twice, mate.  Can ye accept a bit o' assist from a pirate ... or can ye not?

Godley:  I must be cruel only to be kind, as the poet says.  There is no way I am going to let you upset Inspector more.  Keep away from him.  You and your lot have done harm enough.  But if you want to talk about Fiji, fine by me.  I will be waiting for you tomorrow.

Manouche:  By th' bloody powers, yer a stubborn man, fer all that yer intentions are those of a friend to th' Inspector.  But sometimes th' road t' hell is paved with good intentions.  *shakes head*  Very well, I'll come back tomorrow, see what I can help ye with on this Fiji matter, long as I won't be betrayin' a trust.  Per'aps then, ye'll reconsider.  I'm madly in love with lil' Raven.  It ain't bloody likely I'd be wantin' to do harm to his dad.  *tries to look past Godley, to see Abberline; Godley blocks the door.*  Right.  Tomorrow at noon.  I reckon th' Inspector knows where t' find me if he wishes.  That is, if he wants to discuss, ahh, Portsmith's watch, as it were.  *sighs, turns, leaves building, heads back home.*

Godley:  We will see who walks the road to hell, dear Manouche.  Improvement makes straight roads; but the crooked roads without improvement are roads of genius ...  *He returns to the office and sees that Abberline has fallen asleep at the desk.  Sits down and begins to plan what to do tomorrow*

At Manouche and Blake's house:

Manouche *enters house quietly, everyone still asleep.  Sees Refugee, who looks at her sympathetically, waves tail.  She pats his head, unties scarf around his neck, wads up note, slips it in her pocket.  Winds scarf around her neck without tying it, walks over to buffet, pours glass of rum, takes long drink*

Raven:  Where did you go?

Manouche:  Gaahh!!  *nearly spills rum, spins around, sees Raven sitting in big wingback chair in corner.  Catches her breath, walks over to him, sits on ottoman in front of chair, facing him, whispers*  Blimey, lil’ mate, what’re ye doin’ up this hour?

Raven:  You’re sad.  Where did you go?  Did someone make you sad?

Manouche:  Well … I went t’ see Abberline.  I, ah … I don’t know, jus’ … curious about some things, is all …

Raven:  He’s my father, isn’t he?

Manouche *looks at him carefully*  With all we been through together, no point in not bein' honest with ye.  I … I think he may be.  *adds quickly*  I went t’ see him ‘cause I think he wants t’ talk about you.  An’ I were hopin’ to let ‘im know he could talk t’ me, if he were of a mind.  Savvy?

Raven:  D-does he hate me?  *big dark eyes wide, solemn*

Manouche *stands up, squeezes in next to him in chair, sets glass on side table, puts arms around him*  Blimey, no, luv!  He don’t hate ye.  Matter o’ fact … ye know how you an’ I get feelin’s about people, like we do?  Well, I ‘ave a feelin’ about him.  I think he wants t’ see ye, but … I think he’s afraid.  Jus’ think, lil’ mate … could be, he’s afraid o' th' same thing yer afraid of ... he may be afraid ye won’t like him.  *smiles*  Funny ol’ world, innit?

Raven *perks up, hope in his eyes*  Can we invite him over?  Can we go to brunch with him at Chez Roux, like we did with Willy an’ Madame?

Manouche *grins*  Not jus’ yet, luv.  Per’aps later on.  No worries, though, it’ll all be sorted, I promise.  Ye’ll see.  Fer one thing, I’m not finished yet.  I’m goin’ back there tomorrow, see if I can find out more.

Raven:  Can I go with you?

Manouche:  Nooo, better not this time, luv.  It’s official business, this.  But I’m hopin’ more’ll come of it than that.

Raven:  Manouche … is he a good man?  I don’t think Mother likes him.

Manouche *pauses, nods*  Aye, he’s a good man.  He’s human, an’ we all ‘ave our faults, an’ he an’ yer mum have ‘ad their differences.  Happens with grownups sometimes.  But he’s a good man, lil’ mate.  Ye got nothin’ t’ be ashamed of in yer heritage.  Promise me ye won’t ever forget that, an’ don’t let anyone tell ye different.  *smiles, pulls him close, kisses him*  Now, how ‘bout ye get back t’ bed?  Ye need yer rest, luv.

*Raven throws his arms around her, kisses her, slips out of the chair, runs back to his room.  She watches him go, smile fades, picks up glass, gazes down into the rum.  Refugee comes over, puts head in her lap, looks up at her soulfully.  She rubs his ears, then pictures Gili again, blushes.  Almost stops petting him, then changes her mind, keeps scratching behind his ears, and he smiles a doggie-smile.  She grins back at him.*  Aye, good heritage lil’ mate has … eh, Uncle Gili?  *drinks rum slowly, thinks about tomorrow, hoping she’ll see Abberline*

*Kat listening at door, quickly dives for the bed and feigns sleep as Raven returns to bed, waiting for him to fall back to sleep.  Once she’s sure he’s asleep, she rises and looks at him softly, saying*  Never trust anyone luv.  It be the golden rule.  *leans over, lightly kisses his forehead, exits room; Refugee immediately sits up.  Kat smiles reassuringly*  Everything’s fine brother, just going for a walk.  You stay here in case Raven wakes and finds me gone, eh?  Back in a while.  *she exits the house closing the door.  mutters*  Surrounded by betrayers.  *Circles to side of house retrieving her shovel, makes her way towards town.*

Manouche *had almost dropped off to sleep next to Blake, suddenly pops awake, thinking she's heard something.  Slips out of bed, tiptoes through house, sees Refugee, who whines slightly.  Looks in Raven's room, sees he's sleeping, breathes a sigh of relief.  Searches the rest of the house, feels growing panic when she doesn't find Kat.*  Oh, bloody 'ell!  Where's she gone?  I got t' find 'er, no tellin' what crazy notion she's got in 'er head.  *runs back to bedroom, throws clothes on, puts on coat, quickly and quietly slips out door, starts toward town.*

At Godley's office:

*Godley wakes up in the middle of the night with a start from the couch where he's been.  Bewildered, he staggers up, bumps into a chair and finally manages to put on the light.  Everything is perfectly still.  And Abberline is gone*

Near From Hell Court:

Manouche *walking through the woods, approaching town, quietly calling Kat's name.  Reaches alleyways near From Hell Court, sees a familiar, shovel-wielding figure*  KAT!  Thank th’ stars.  *runs up to her, skids to a stop as Kat turns to her threateningly, her face dark*  Ahh … Kat?  Y’sound, luv?

Kat:  Bleedin’ betrayers.  Everywhere.  Get away from me, traitor.  *raises shovel at her threateningly*

Manouche:  Oh, Kat, y’don’t know what yer sayin’.  *pauses*  Ye heard me talkin’ t’ Raven, didn’t ye?

Kat *eyes glazed, holding shovel higher*  The deepest circle of Hell is reserved for betrayers an’ mutineers.  An' Abberline ... 'e's seen what Raven is, he'll bring 'im nothing but sorrow ... that blighter, damn 'im ter the depths ...

Manouche:  K-Kat, listen t’ me.  Ye’ve got t’ think about other things besides any ill feelin’s ye harbor toward me, or toward Abberline.  Like it er not, he’s Raven’s dad, now, don’t bother t’ deny it, we all know it’s true.  But think about it, mate.  It wouldn’t take much fer Portsmith an’ company to put ye away.  Then where would Raven be?  They could make Raven a ward o’ th’ bloody state, luv.  Who knows where he’d end up?  Now I’ll grant, quite possibly I been pokin’ me nose where it don’t belong, an’ fer that I offer me apologies.  An' it's true, I 'ave no idea what went before between you an' Abberline.  Could be he deserves a damn good whackin', as well.  But if ye don’t keep a cool head fer now, mate, ye may as well put yer beautiful boy in a bloody freak show, ‘cause that’s exactly what may ‘appen to him.  Savvy?  Now put th’ blasted shovel down, an’ let’s go back home.  *Holds hand out to her.*

Kat *considers everything, the anger goes out of her face, and she lowers the shovel without a word.  Manouche breathes a sigh of relief, puts an arm around Kat’s shoulders, they head back to the house.*
